Love the idea of a simple pizza recipe? Don't miss out on this delicious Pizza Pinwheel! It's literally the perfect way to make pizza, without any hassle at all!
Pizza pinwheels are super popular for a reason. Not only are they fun to make but they're also super fun to eat. Nothing beats biting into the crust and having the gooey mozzarella drip into your mouth. Pizza pinwheels make that so.
Pizza is about the crust, toppings, and flavor so it just makes sense to crescent roll dough as the base. The crescent dough crust is the most important part of the pinwheel pizza, in my opinion.
It will not only make your pizza have a rich and delicious flavor but it will also give it layers of buttery goodness, too. I don't know about you but I'm pretty much obsessed with the taste and flavor of crescent rolls!
I have created, in my time, many a recipe using delicious crescent roll dough. They include:
- Easy Crescent Roll Egg Cups
- Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls
- Cheeseburger Meatball Stuffed Crescent Rolls
- Cruffins
Have you ever had a cruffin?? A simple recipe that combines cranberries with crescent dough with the end result being absolutely fabulous. Just as a side note, I thought I'd offer that idea 😊
Pinwheel Pizza
This is a perfect pizza appetizer recipe or a fun game day treat as well. Pretty much the go-to pizza recipe that I always like to whip up for all my family and friends. (I never hear any objections from them!)
In fact, I get asked all the time how I make them. They are so popular that everyone wants to make a pinwheel pizza at home for their families.
Because, I tell you, one of the biggest reasons that people don't make their own homemade pizza is because the crust just takes way too long. For this reason, the premade dough is a lifesaver! But not just any dough...like I said before, crescent roll dough. Seriously, so good.
I know what you're thinking...can you really taste the crescent roll dough with all the other added pizza toppings? And to this question, my answer is yes.
You're going to be amazed at how much flavor this simple pizza recipe truly has and you'll be craving another piece even before you finish your first.
Pizza Pinwheels with Crescent Rolls
The biggest thing to keep in mind when cooking using crescent rolls is that you're wanting to pay attention to the process of not burning the crust. This is a MUST when you're looking for the best-tasting pizza recipe, ever.
As long as you follow the directions below, you should be able to perfectly crisp the crescent roll crust with ease. The bottom should be crispy while the middle should be soft and chewy. That is the perfect texture that you're going for with this pizza dish.
The combination of textures is like no other. When you bite into the crisp crust and then feel the soft middle, it's absolutely delightful and I'm convinced that you will agree with me once you try it.
Ingredients to make Crescent Dough Pizza
As you can see, you don't need a ton of ingredients to whip up this delicious pizza recipe. It'll be ready to eat and enjoy in less than 30 minutes of time!
- Can crescent dough sheet
- 4 mozzarella sticks
- 1 tablespoon fresh basil
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (divided)
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt (divided)
- 1 cup marinara
Fun Pizza Toppings
We all know that toppings can really make or break a pizza! And for me, I love pizza topping options!
Some simple pizza toppings to consider are:
- more cheese
- pepperoni
- sausage
- veggies
- artichoke hearts
- ground turkey or beef
- parmesan cheese
And those are just a few. You can easily add on whatever you love and crave and change up this pinwheel pizza recipe every single time.
I actually like to change this up every time that I make it because I like my pizza to have a variety of flavors. There are very few times when I'll make the same pizza recipe over and over again. Slight changes can make for a huge flavor difference!
Instructions For Making Pinwheel Pizza
Take out all of your ingredients and get ready to make this great pizza!
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
On a floured cutting board, place crescent dough and roll out all the way.
Using a pizza cutter (or knife if that's all you have), cut the dough into 6 sections.
Take mozzarella sticks and slice lengthwise into thin sections.
Place mozzarella in the middle of the dough and repeat until there is ¼ inch space left on the top and bottom of the dough.
Sprinkle ½ teaspoon each of Italian seasoning and garlic over the dough and cheese.
Wrap the cheese in the dough.
Starting at the center of the pizza pan, wrap the dough pieces around like a coil and continue until all of the dough sections have been used.
Sprinkle the rest of the Italian seasoning and garlic salt over the pizza, then cover generously with marinara sauce.
Top with mozzarella and basil.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Cut the pizza into triangles, serve and enjoy!
Tips for Making Italian Pinwheel Pizza
Make certain to preheat the oven before adding the pizza for optimal baking.
Peel apart mozzarella sticks are perfect for this recipe if you can find them!
We like to cut this pizza into triangles to serve but it's totally up to you and your preference. Some people cut their pizzas into squares which is a great trick for stretching the pizza a bit further and making them also easier to hold in one hand!
Pizza Dipping Sauces
If you love to dip your pizza, we're pizza soul sisters! Some of my favorite ways to eat pizza are to dip each and every bite. Here are a few pizza dips that are certain to add delicious flavor and taste:
- Marinara sauce
- Ranch dressing
- Blue cheese dressing
- Salsa
Some people even use ketchup and mustard to dip their pizza bites in! I've never tried this but I would imagine it probably does taste pretty good!
When Patrick was young he used to set up different dipping stations for people to try out new things. There would be homemade dips like french onion made the old fashioned way, just sour cream and soup mix (although, you'd never know by the time he was done mixing it).
Sometimes, he'd even put something as wild as horseradish out...you never know what you're going to like until you try it!
How to Store Leftover Pizza
If you are looking enough to have some pizza pinwheels leftover, this means you'll get another chance to eat them again! Just store them in an airtight container and place them in the fridge for later.
You can store the leftover slices in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and still be able to enjoy the ooey, gooey middle.
And my advice? Warm them up slowly in the oven or for just a few seconds in the microwave. (I'm also a fan of cold pizza but that's just my personal preference!)
What kind of seasonings work best for pizza?
Italian seasoning is going to be the main seasoning that you're going for. However, in saying that, I've also used just pizza sauce that is already seasoned as well in place of the marinara.
I also really like to use olive oil for the crust over pizza sauce but again, that is entirely up to you.
If you like a little bit of heat, you can always sprinkle on some cayenne pepper or even some red pepper flakes to bring out the spice. In my house, when Patrick comes over, we heap on the peppers, when it's only Ken and I, we make it fairly mild.
Just be certain, when you're making this for someone else too, that if you're adding spice, only add it to your own slice of pizza so that others can enjoy theirs without burning their mouths!
If you like this simple pizza recipe, why stop? I'm all about trying new recipes and seeing which ones are my favorite! When it comes to pizza, you can never go wrong!
