A bowl full of chex mix in a wooden bowl.

We are big, big fans of Chex Mix recipes. They're easy to make, easy to tweak, and can be prepared in a variety of flavors, from savory options to sweet versions like this caramel Chex Mix.

We make a delicious ranch snack mix made with Cheez-Its, and we took that cheesy inspiration to make this cheddar Chex mix. It's quick, easy, and superior to anything you'll find at the grocery store.

The ingredients needed to make cheddar chex mix on the table in bowls with labels to identify each one.
    • Cheez-Its: Any of your favorite Cheeze-Its varieties will work well in this recipe or your favorite cheesy snack like mini Ritz, cheese popcorn, cheetos, or cheese puffs.
    • Goldfish: We used cheddar cheese but feel free to use your favorite flavor or use Birdie crackers instead for different flavor.
    • Rye Bagel Chips: Use your favorite kind of bagel chips or check out our homemade bagel chips. Pretzels are also an option as they have the same crunch but a saltier flavor.
    • Rice Chex: We used Rice Chex, but Corn Chex is a nice variation.
    • Butter: Salted butter is ideal but you can use vegetable oil or olive oil instead to bind the nacho cheese powder to the other ingredients. Start with 2 tablespoons and add more if needed until coated.
    • Nacho Cheese Popcorn Powder: Our favorite but feel free to use white cheddar or flamin hot cheddar if you prefer.

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

    Instructions

A little mixing and baking is pretty much all there is to this super-easy recipe. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

    Recipe FAQs

    What is cheddar Chex mix?

This cheddar cheese snack mix is a homemade version of Cheddar Chex Mix, made with Rice Chex, Cheez-Its, Goldfish, rye chips, and nacho cheese powder.

Can I use regular shredded cheese?

Fresh cheddar is not recommended. Shredded cheese doesn't coat the mix well and can burn or get greasy during baking. Stick with dry cheese powder for best results.

Can I make a spicy version?

Definitely! Add a pinch of cayenne, chili powder, or a few dashes of hot sauce to the melted butter before tossing with the mix.
