The History of Pizza
Long before the first official pizza was made, people had been making flatbreads with adding toppings. Over the years, those recipes evolved, bringing us what many food historians to be the precursor of pizza - focaccia.
That makes a lot of sense, as focaccia is a bread topped with tomato and cheese. Sounds a lot like pizza, doesn't it?
The first pizzas were made in Naples, Italy, and were used as fast, affordable, tasty meals for on-the-go, working-class Neapolitans.
What's interesting is that while you can find pizza joints on every corner these days, pizza didn't gain mass appeal until the 1940s when Italian immigrants brought the dish to the United States.
What makes a pizza?
Traditional pizzas featured crusts topped with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, but these days, you can find them in variations from rustic, authentic varieties to barbecue, pineapple and ham, and everything in between.
What all pizzas have in common, however, is their basic elements. All pizzas are comprised of a crust, sauce, and toppings.
How Pizza Has Changed Over the Years
The popularity of traditional pizza exploded in the 1940s when it was brought to the States by Italian Immigrants. However, as with all cultures, North Americans began putting their own spin on this dish over the years.
Throughout the years, the traditional thick crust has been adapted into thin crust, rising crust, and with the advent of keto and low carb eating, even crust made with cauliflower.
Over the years since its introduction to North America, pizza toppings have changed, as well. You'll find pizzas loaded with various meats, several kinds of cheeses, barbecue sauce, pineapple, Buffalo chicken flavors, and much more.
People even make pizza breads and dips. Basically, pizza has become more of a flavor profile and/or shape than a singular dish.
