Ingredients
The 5 items listed below are all you need to make these homemade cookies and cream Rice Krispie treats. This recipe uses common ingredients to make an impressive sweet treat.

- Butter: I prefer unsalted butter in this recipe so the Oreo treats don’t taste salty. You can use butter straight from the refrigerator because it will be melted on the stove.
- Marshmallows: I like mini marshmallows for these treats because they melt faster. Regular-sized marshmallows will still work just fine in a pinch.
- Vanilla extract: The subtle vanilla flavor perfectly enhances the marshmallows' flavor. I love pure vanilla, but imitation works if you have it!
- Rice Krispies: I use original Rice Krispies cereal for this recipe, but any brand of crispy rice cereal would be great for these treats.
- Oreos: Regular Oreos are best for this recipe. I don’t recommend Double Stuf because there’s too much filling which will make the Rice Krispie treats fall apart more easily.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Peanut butter: I like to use peanut butter Oreos and add a scoop of peanut butter to the marshmallow mixture (I decrease the mini marshmallows by about ½ cup) for a salty sweet version.
- Brown butter: When you melt the butter, allow it to cook over low heat until it reaches a light brown color and gives off a nutty aroma. Brown butter adds depth to recipes and will give these Oreo cookie treats a different flavor.
- White chocolate: Stir in white chocolate chips for pops of richness. You can even melt some to add a drizzle on top to enhance the presentation.
- Golden Oreos: Try this recipe with Golden Oreos instead of chocolate for a fun twist.
How to Make Oreo Rice Krispie Treats
Here are the instructions on how to make these Oreo Krispie treats. Before you get started, I recommend that you spray a 9x13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray or line it with parchment, so it’s easy to remove for slicing once it has set.

Step 1: Crush the Oreos. Place the Oreos inside a large Ziploc bag. Crush the cookies inside the bag using a rolling pin or your hands. Then, set them aside for the next step!

Step 2: Make the marshmallow mixture. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Then, stir in the marshmallows. Continue to stir the mixture until the marshmallows are fully melted and smooth. Remove the pan from the heat and mix in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to bring out the flavors.

Step 3: Add the Rice Krispie cereal. Next, stir in the cereal until it is well coated in the melted marshmallow mixture. I like to use a rubber spatula or a wooden spoon for this step.

Step 4: Stir in Oreos. Gently fold in half the Oreo pieces next. Ensure they are well distributed throughout the Rice Krispie mixture.

Step 5: Transfer to the pan. Carefully pour the Oreo Rice Krispie mixture into the prepared 9x12 pan. Press it down with your hands or a spatula until it’s compact and even.

Step 6: Top with remaining Oreos and cool. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on top while it's still warm for presentation and texture. Allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
Recipe Tips
- Don’t pulverize the Oreos: I like to have decent-sized pieces of Oreos in these treats so I can see and taste them. Crush them in a plastic bag with a rolling pin for best results. If you prefer finer crumbs, you can use a food processor.
- Grease a knife before slicing: I find that to achieve clean and even slices, greasing the knife with a little butter or cooking spray keeps it from sticking to the gooey melted marshmallow.
- Watch the stove: You don’t want the heat to become too high and burn the marshmallow mixture. Ensure that you stir it frequently, and remove it from the heat as soon as the marshmallows are fully melted.
- Storing tips: Store these Oreo cookie treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. I don't recommend freezing them.

Serving Suggestions
- You can’t go wrong with a scoop of ice cream paired with a crispy snack. Try Kit Kat ice cream or hot chocolate ice cream to keep with the chocolate theme.
- Use chocolate covered blueberries as a garnish to add a pop of freshness to the Oreo treats.
- Pair them with similar desserts to create a party platter of sweets. Cream cheese brownies and peanut butter M&M cookies are some of my favorite options.

Recipe FAQs
I don’t recommend it because it can make them too firm and difficult to eat. They remain soft and chewy at room temperature.
If the heat was too high while you were melting the marshmallows, it may have caused some of the sugar to crystallize, which can make the Rice Krispie treats hard when they cool.
Old marshmallows may become stale and difficult to melt. Ensure your marshmallows are fresh before you make this recipe.
