Ingredients
Here's a look at the ingredients you need to make these Rice Krispie treats dipped in chocolate.
- Rice Krispies Cereal: We're using traditional Rice Krispies! However, you can also use a gluten-free crispy rice cereal, brown rice crispies, or Cocoa Krispies depending on your dietary or flavor preferences.
- Salted Butter: Recommended to balance flavor and to help the marshmallows melt smoothly.
- Marshmallows: Marshmallows hold your treats together. Use fresh marshmallows for the best results and both full-sized and mini marshmallows will work.
- Vanilla Extract: Vanilla is a universal crowd-pleaser, but feel free to add your favorite extract flavor to the marshmallow mixture like almond, coconut, banana, or maple instead.
- Chocolate: High-quality chocolate like Belgian chocolate which melts great and tastes the best. You can use dark, milk, white chocolate, or even a variety of these options to make your treats. Chocolate chips or chocolate candy melts in your favorite color or colors will also work based on your preference.
- Sprinkles and Nuts: Totally option but you can use a variety of seasonal and festive sprinkles or chopped nuts.
See the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and the exact quantities of each one.
Substitutions and Variations
- Cut Into Shapes: Instead of squares you can remove the entire dessert from the pan once they've set and cut them into different shapes using a greased sharp knife or a greased cookie cutter.
- Shape By Hand: Use a little bit of butter to grease your hands and shape the Rice Krispie mixture into shapes like balls, hearts, moons, or whatever you desire.
- Add Peanut Butter or Caramel. Not only to add a different flavor but it also increases the gooeyness. Add about a quarter cup of peanut butter or caramel to the marshmallows before adding the Rice Krispies.
- Other Toppings: Ditch regular sprinkles or nuts for edible glitter, sparkles, candies, Heath (Skor) bits, chopped peanut butter chips, caramel chips, mini M&M's, or coconut.
- Swap the Cereal: Just about any type of cereal works when making marshmallow treats. Try Chex or Golden Crisp for a change.
How to Make Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats
Here's a look at the simple steps for making these fun and festive treats. Before you start making them, grease a 9 x 9-inch square baking pan with butter or cooking spray and set it aside.
Step 1: Melt the butter over low heat and add the marshmallows to the pot.
Step 2: Stir until the marshmallows are completely melted. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 3: Add the Rice Krispies cereal to the marshmallow mixture.
Step 4: Gently fold them together until the cereal is evenly coated.
Step 5: Transfer the mixture to the prepared 9 x 9-inch pan.
Step 6: Use a buttered spatula or wax paper to evenly press the mixture into the pan. Allow the Rice Krispie mixture to cool and set in the pan for about 30 minutes.
Step 7: Use a sharp knife to cut the Rice Krispie treats into squares or rectangles after they've set up.
Step 8: Melt the chocolate in 15-second intervals in the microwave until it's smooth. Be sure to stir in between each heating interval.
PRO TIP: If the chocolate is too thick or not smooth you can add a teaspoon of oil to the chocolate to thin it out and stir in until smooth.
Step 9: Insert a popsicle stick into a Rice Krispie Square.
Step 10: Dip each Rice Krispie treat into the melted chocolate coating the top inch or so of the square. Allow excess to drip off.
Step 11: Immediately sprinkle the melted chocolate with sprinkles or nuts before the chocolate sets. You can also drizzle with white chocolate for contrast. Place them on a parchment paper lined pan to set.
Once the chocolate is fully set, serve and enjoy!
⭐️ Hint: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper before you begin to dip treats so you have a place to put your treats after dipping them in chocolate.

Storage
Storing: Place them in an airtight container lined with ideally parchment paper but aluminum foil also works. This will prevent them from sticking together, maintain freshness, and prevent the chocolate from softening.
Keep them away from direct sunlight in a cool dry place for 2-3 days. If it's too warm you can also store them in the fridge for up to six days. Allow them to set at room temperature for about ten minutes before serving.
Freezer: For longer storage, freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring them to a container. Use parchment paper between layers to avoid them fusing together. Thaw at room temperature for a few hours before serving.
Serving Suggestions
- Give a Gift: Wrap each treat in parchment paper and tie a ribbon around the stick or package to secure it. Perfect for any holiday or occasion.

Tips
- Fresh Ingredients. Use fresh marshmallows and cereal for best results. Since we aren't cooking these any staleness in the ingredients may alter the flavor.
- Dipping Your Treats. Make sure they are at room temperature before dipping to prevent the chocolate from cracking.
- Cutting the Squares. Use a sharp knife greased with butter or sprayed with cooking spray when cutting to ensure clean edges.
- Melting the Chocolate. It's important to melt the chocolate slowly in the microwave in 15-second increments. Stir after each one in order to prevent the chocolate from burning.
- Grease Your Hands or Utensils. It's easier to press the mixture into the pan if you grease your hands with butter or cooking spray since the mixture is very sticky. You can also use a grease spatula or a piece of parchment for pressing.
- Allow Them Time to Set. Give the treats time to set up before you cut and dip them. This way they will hold their shape. They also need to set again after dipping in the chocolate.
- Use a Pan Lined with Parchment. Set it up before begin to dip treats so you have a place to put your treats after dipping them in chocolate. The parchment makes them easier to remove once the chocolate sets.
