    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • It's fast to prepare: If you're looking for something quick to make that's also delicious, a turkey and cheese melt is a great choice.
    • It's budget-friendly: The ingredients used in this turkey melt recipe are affordable and common, so you don't have to worry about spending a ton of extra money to enjoy it.
    • It's easy to customize: I love that you can get creative, too! Switch up any of the components to make a totally different sandwich.

    Ingredients

The most important components of this recipe are listed below. I used my favorite types of bread, cheese, etc, but you can shake things up as well.c.

Ingredients for this sandwich on a table.
    • Bread: My go-to is sourdough bread because it crisps very well and is a little larger than your typical sandwich bread. Feel free to try this turkey sandwich melt recipe with multigrain bread or any type you prefer.
    • Cheese: I chose two varieties: Swiss and provolone. They melt exceptionally well and pair perfectly with the sliced turkey. Make your turkey melts with any kind of cheese you want. Cheddar and pepper jack work well, too.
    • Turkey: I typically go with deli turkey, but you can absolutely use leftover turkey as well. This recipe is perfect for Thanksgiving leftovers!
    • Toppings: When I make a turkey melt, I top it with bacon, tomato, and mayonnaise. Of course, you can add sliced onion, yellow mustard, or anything else you like on your sandwich. Just remember, it will be warm, so be careful about what produce you choose.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Add avocado: Add mashed or sliced avocado to add more creaminess to your turkey sandwich melt.
    • Use chicken: Try this recipe with deli-sliced chicken instead of turkey.
    • Mediterranean-style: Add some feta and olives for a Mediterranean twist.

How to Make a Turkey Melt

Here are the steps needed to make a turkey bacon melt. It's like making a grilled cheese, except with more toppings!

Butter spread on one side of each slice of bread.

Step 1: Butter the bread. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Bread placed buttered side down on a skillet.

Step 2: Add one slice to the skillet. Next, heat your skillet over medium heat and place on slice into it, butter side down.

Layers of mayo, cheese, turkey, tomato, and bacon on the bread.

Step 3: Top with ingredients. Then, layer with mayo, cheese, turkey, tomato, bacon, and the second slice of bread on top, with the butter side facing up.

The sandwich flipped to brown the other side.

Step 4: Once the bottom slice is golden brown, carefully flip the sandwich and brown the other side. Remove your turkey melt from the pan and slice it in half. Enjoy it with some steak fries for a complete meal!

    Recipe Tips

    • Storage and reheating directions: Store your sandwich tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Keep it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days once it has cooled. You may reheat the sandwich in the microwave for 50 seconds or in a skillet over low heat.
    • Make it in the air fryer: Assemble your sandwich and place it in the air fryer. Cook it at 370°F for 5-7 minutes, flipping it halfway through.
    • Watch the heat when toasting: Be careful that the heat doesn't get too high, or the outside of the sandwich will burn.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Use your favorite pickles, like dill or bread and butter, as a topping. If you want some heat, these horseradish pickles or habanero peppers also liven up the turkey melt.
    • Swap regular mayonnaise for honey mustard mayo or avocado aioli!
    • Enjoy a comforting lunch and serve your sandwich with a cozy bowl of cream of tomato soup.

    Recipe FAQs

    Can I make it ahead?

You can, but I wouldn't cook it until you're ready to serve it. It will have the best flavor and texture when toasted fresh.

Can I freeze the leftover turkey sandwich?

Turkey melts do not freeze and thaw well. The bread becomes very soggy.

    Can I leave it cold?

Sure! If you are not feeling a melty sandwich, assemble and eat it cold!

    Instructions

    • Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread, ensuring the butter is evenly spread to the edges of the bread.
    • Heat a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Place one slice of bread, butter side down, into the skillet. Top the slice with mayonnaise, Swiss cheese, provolone cheese, turkey, tomato, bacon, and then top with the other slice of bread butter side up.
    • Cook on medium until the bread is toasted. Lift the edge of the bread to check for doneness. Once toasted, flip the sandwich over carefully and toast the other side. Press the sandwich together firmly with the spatula.

    Notes

    • This is not a recipe that belongs in the freezer. These turkey melts are best made fresh!
    • You may prepare it ahead and keep it in the fridge for a couple of hours, but I wouldn't add butter or toast it until you're ready to eat.
    • Try crisping your turkey melt in the air fryer instead of a skillet.
