This 4th of July Candy is so easy to make! You take a few different types of chocolate, melt and layer them into a delicious bark. I like that I can serve it at parties, at home with the family, or even add it to goodie bags for special occasions or events. There are so many situations where a good chocolate bark makes the perfect snack.

    • Patriotic Candy Bark

The best part about this recipe is the freedom to decorate and have some fun with it! I chose a patriotic theme to serve the candy for the 4th of July or Memorial Day, but you can do whatever you want. I use red, white, and blue M&Ms and sprinkles with adorable little stars that fit the theme wonderfully.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • It’s cheap to make: This recipe is so inexpensive! You only need chocolate and a variety of toppings to make it, which doesn’t cost a lot.
    • It’s easy: It’s not hard to make either. Most of the steps, including melting the chocolate and letting it set, is not complicated at all for someone who doesn’t make desserts.
    • It’s only a few ingredients: I use 3 kinds of chocolate and 3 toppings. You can switch up or use fewer, but it’s still not a lot of components either way.

    Ingredients

Below is everything you’ll need to make your version of this 4th of July candy. It’s truly one of the easiest patriotic treats ever with no baking required.

All the ingredients needed to make 4th of july chocolate bark on a concrete surface.
    • Chocolate: I use semi-sweet, milk, and white chocolate for this Fourth of July candy. I mix the first two and then add a layer of white chocolate on top to make the decorations pop more.
    • M&Ms: Red, white, and blue M&Ms add great patriotic flair to the chocolate bark. They provide a crunchy texture.
    • Oreos: I like the texture of crumbled Oreos on top, too. They’re more for flavor and crunch than for the patriotic presentation.
    • Sprinkles: Red, white, and blue sprinkles are a great addition, too. The kind I use also has white stars and gold pearls to make it even more fun.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Add berries: Top the Fourth of July candy bark with freeze-dried berries for texture, fruity flavor, and more red and blue.
    • Make it gluten-free: Use gluten-free Oreos and ensure all of the other ingredients are gluten-free as well.
    • Add nuts: Incorporate more crunch with chopped nuts. Pecans, walnuts, and peanuts are lovely ideas.

How to Make 4th of July Candy

To get started on your July 4th candy, grab a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper. This will keep the chocolate from getting stuck to the pan.

A heat-safe bowl over a saucepan with semi-sweet and milk chocolate.

Step 1: Set up your double boiler. First, place a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan with 2 inches of water and bring it to a low boil. Then, add the semi-sweet and milk chocolate.

    Chocolate melted in the bowl.

Step 2: Melt the chocolate. Once the chocolate starts to melt, stir it occasionally until it’s smooth.

Melted chocolate poured into the prepared pan and spread evenly.

Step 3: Spread and chill. Next, pour it onto the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Pop it in the fridge for about 10 minutes to set.

A layer of sprinkle the toppings on top of the chocolate.

Step 4: Melt white chocolate and add toppings. Melt the white chocolate, spread it over the first chocolate layer, and sprinkle the toppings on it. Now you can place it back in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Cut or crack it and enjoy!

    Recipe Tips

    • Use good-quality chocolate: Better quality chocolate tastes better. It has stronger cocoa flavors and doesn’t taste as sugary. You don’t have to buy super expensive chocolate but don’t go for the cheapest available.
    • Spread the chocolate evenly: Ensure that you spread the melted chocolate as evenly as possible. This ensures that you don’t have very thick or very thin pieces of candy bark.
    • Add the toppings quickly: Sprinkle the toppings on as soon as you spread the white chocolate. They won’t stick as well once the chocolate starts to set.
    • Storing: Store the candy in an airtight container or Ziploc bag at room temperature for 3-4 days. Freeze it in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Create a fun snack charcuterie with other adorable treats like butterfly pretzels and chocolate fruit cups.
    • Prepare a cold, sweet beverage like Dr Pepper floats to enjoy with your 4th of July candy.
    • Kool-Aid popsicles are another tasty summer treat you can serve.
    • Top your cherry cream cheese pie with some candy bark to get it a patriotic presentation.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I melt the chocolate in the microwave?

Sure. Heat it in 30-second intervals and stir in between each one. It’s ready when it’s smooth!

Can I let the chocolate bark set at room temperature?

Of course. It will take longer, but it’s completely fine!

Can I swirl the chocolate together instead?

I don’t do this to make the decorations pop, but you can if you want. It would make a really fun design!
