If you love unique and easy desserts, this Dr. Pepper Ice Cream Float is a must-try. The rich and creamy ice cream reinforces the Dr. Pepper flavor you get from the soda. I have a homemade Dr. Pepper Ice Cream recipe that you can use or you can purchase it from the store. I know Blue Bell makes its own version.

The combination of Dr Pepper and ice cream creates a delightfully creamy and frothy treat. As the soda mixes with the ice cream, it transforms into a fizzy dessert you can enjoy with both a spoon and a straw. If you love ice cream floats, this recipe is sure to become a favorite!

Why You’ll Love This Dr. Pepper Float Recipe

    • It’s only 2 ingredients: All you need to make the best Dr. Pepper float is Dr. Pepper soda and Dr. Pepper-flavored ice cream.
    • It’s a simple dessert: To make this dessert, you just need to scoop ice cream and add the soda. It can’t get any easier than that!
    • It’s a crowd pleaser: Try making this for a birthday party treat or a special get-together. I promise it will be a hit every time!

    Ingredients

Two cans of Dr. Pepper and a dish of ice cream arranged on a marble surface.
    • Dr. Pepper: I use classic Dr. Pepper for this ice cream float. Feel free to use diet, zero sugar, or one of the flavor variations like cream soda or cherry.
    • Ice cream: Use Blue Bell’s Dr. Pepper Float ice cream or this homemade Dr. Pepper Ice Cream recipe. If you find another brand to try, it will work as well!

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Frozen yogurt: Use your favorite variety of frozen yogurt in place of the ice cream if you’d like!
    • Dairy-free: If you want a similar flavor, you can use your favorite non-dairy vanilla or chocolate ice cream instead. It’s still delish with the soda!
    • Chocolate: Swirl in some rich chocolate sauce for a tasty chocolatey version.

How to Make a Dr. Pepper Ice Cream Float

To make this Dr. Pepper float, you only need to combine the ice cream and soda. It’s that simple! Grab all your ingredients straight from the refrigerator and freezer.

Two big scoops of ice cream in a tall glass.

Step 1: Scoop the ice cream. Scoop two cups of ice cream into each glass (this is about two big scoops).

Dr. Pepper added to a glass to cover the ice cream inside.

Step 2: Pour the soda. Then, carefully pour the Dr. Pepper into each glass over the ice cream. Half of the can will go into each float. Give it a gentle stir if needed!

Two tall glasses containing Dr. Pepper floats with Dr. Pepper cans around and a dish of ice cream.

Step 3: Serve. Enjoy your super cold treat!

    Recipe Tips

    • Pour the soda slowly: When the Dr. Pepper mixes with the ice cream, it produces a lot of foam. Pour it slowly so it doesn’t overflow and make a mess.
    • Serve immediately: This isn’t a dessert that can sit out. Make it when you’re ready to enjoy it!
    • Add garnishes: This is your chance to get creative with the presentation. Garnish with colored sprinkles or your favorite candies to take it to the next level!

    Serving Suggestions

    • If you want a creative and homemade topping, try a fruit syrup like blueberry syrup or cranberry simple syrup for a fun flavor.
    • Shakes and ice cream floats go well with burgers. Try a unique burger recipe like turkey burger sliders or smash burger tacos.
    • Want an even easier dinner idea? Make some juicy broiled pork chops and serve the Dr. Pepper float for dessert.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I save leftovers if I don’t finish it?

I don’t recommend it. As it sits in the refrigerator, the ice cream will become soupy and the soda loses its fizz. If you freeze it, the soda will be icy. Only make it if you intend to serve it right away.

How can I keep the ice cream float cold for longer?

To keep your ice cream float cold for longer, try chilling the glass before adding the ingredients. A cold glass helps maintain the soda and ice cream's temperature better than one at room temperature. Simply place the glass in the freezer for 15–20 minutes before serving!

What kind of glass should I use?

You can use any kind you’d like! One of my go-tos is a large mason jar, but any tall drinking glass would be great.

    Notes

    • Make this recipe immediately before serving to preserve its texture and flavor. Do not make it in advance or store it in the refrigerator or freezer.
    • Pour the Dr. Pepper into the glass slowly to prevent it from becoming too foamy and spilling over the glass.
    • Use a dairy-free vanilla ice cream instead of regular ice cream to make this recipe if you can’t tolerate dairy products.
