Grandma's Oreo Cookie Cake recipe or easy cookies and cream cake is great for birthdays, filled with Oreos or your favorite cream cookies, all baked inside!
Cake with Oreos Baked In
My husband's grandmother used to make this Grandma's Oreo Cookie Cake recipe as a treat whenever she saw him. I believe that's why my husband loves all cream-filled cookies to this day as they remind him of her!
Oh, I should mention that my husband is not the only Oreo and cream-filled cookie lover in this house, that is for sure. I have a long-standing relationship with them as well!
Now back to my husband Ken's grandmother and her wonderful cake with Oreos baked in! I never got to meet her but I wish I did as she sounds even more amazing than this cake! Just kidding! Of course she was more amazing than this cake!
I am told that more often than not she or should I say Bertha, used Oreo cookies, likely because they were and are still my husband's favorite store bought cookie to this very day, even though any cream filled cookie will do for this recipe!
For those of you unfamiliar with Oreo Cookies, here is some information for you just to make sure we are on the same page!
What is an Oreo?
For those of you that don't know what an Oreo is, I will explain it to you. An Oreo is a popular sandwich cookie consisting of two wafers, usually chocolate, with a sweet cream filling.
It was first introduced in 1912, and is the best selling cookie in the United States to this date. Oreos are available in over 100 countries, including the United Kingdom where they are referred to as Oreo Biscuits.
Many varieties of Oreo cookies have been produced (including Golden Oreos, which are great) and limited edition varieties have become popular as of late. If you are interested you can find a lot of information on the history of the Oreo cookie right here.
I have loved Oreo cookies as far back as I can remember. Any cookie that has filling or stuffing in the middle I just love but the Oreo has always been a personal favorite (have I ever told you that my first word wasn't mama or dada? Truth be told, it was actually cookie?).
I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment just twisting the Oreo and separating the top cookie without breaking it! Once I had the unbroken top cookie in hand I would eat it.
Next, I would bite and lick off the creamy center and then eat the bottom half of the cookie. Oh memories! ? Hopefully, I am not the only one who did this.
Easy Oreo Cake Recipe
This recipe for Grandma's Oreo Cookie Cake is so versatile! You can use whichever flavor of cake mix you desire as well as any cream filled cookie and this cake will be a hit, every time!
Both kids and adults love it! We use a homemade buttercream icing but I have used store bought in a pinch and it saves a bit of time when I need to!
A little trick to know with store bought icing or frosting that will make it taste homemade is to whip it in your stand mixer or using your handheld.
Add two to three tablespoons of softened butter and a teaspoon or so of vanilla until you are satisfied with the taste. Some brands require more butter and vanilla than others to taste more like homemade.
I always keep a container around just in case and so should you because you never know when you just might need it!
Oreo Birthday Cake
Doesn't this oreo cookie cake look wonderful? I can't help but think so! Definitely kid and adults alike will love it! Different and always a crowd pleaser, especially on special occasions, even birthdays!
It's so easy to grab any cake mix you desire, whatever color or flavor, your favorite cream filled cookies and you are ready to go! I love how easy this cake is to make and eat and you will too!
Birthday Cake Oreos
My son still requests this cake because of how much he enjoys it and you really get the best of both worlds, cookies and cake all in one, which is why this is the greatest birthday cake!
Making a Cookies and Cream Chocolate Cake is just as much work as one that is not chocolate and there are so many choices!
Some other kinds of cake mixes that are perfect, in my opinion for an Oreo birthday cake, or non-birthday cake are any white, yellow, vanilla, chocolate of any kind, including red velvet, pound or angel food cake.
Don't forget about Rainbow Chip or a Confetti Angel Food Cakes that might be available in some areas as well.
The next time you are shopping have a look in your cake mix aisle and see all of the flavors you have to choose from when you begin to plan for your next event although any excuse will do to try this tasty cake.
Baking with Oreos
I use Oreo crumbs for a base in most of my cheesecakes and Oreo cookies in the two delicious fudge recipes listed below but there are so many things you can do with Oreo cookies!
Oreo Cake Decorating Ideas
Usually, when baking an Oreo cookie cake, even if it's an Oreo birthday cake, I crush and chop up Oreo cookies to sprinkle all over the top, the more Oreo cookies the merrier, I always figure and so did Grandma!
If preparing an Oreo birthday cake you can include some food coloring, liquid or gel, into your icing or frosting. Depending on the holiday or reason for the cake, if any, you can choose to add some food coloring if desired to the cake itself too!
Sparkles and sprinkles also always add lots of color to an Oreo cake, at any time of the year. So many different colors, so little time. Depending on the reson for the cake you might want to be festive or not!

Cookies and Cream Chocolate Cake
This recipe requires the use of a cake mix and luckily there are a lot of different flavors for you to create a cake with oreos baked inside, including chocolate. Literally, the world is your oyster! Anyone else remember the saying?
My son, who loves this cake, enjoyed it with a chocolate cake and golden Oreos throughout and decided the next time he wanted the original Oreos, even if they were dark colored because the golden Oreos just didn't feel the same.
I'll never forget him saying it, he was about eight and I asked him what he meant by "it didn't feel the same" and like it was yesterday he said, "all food gives you a feeling and I think I would feel better if you used the other Oreos, not the special Oreos."
I was not prepared to argue with logic such as that so I agreed and from that point on we used the original Oreo cookies to bake with whenever he was involved and I never heard another criticism about it!
Tips For Making the Grandma's Oreo Cookie Cake
- be careful not to over mix the ingredients to avoid a dense cake
- fill the bundt cake pan to a maximum of ¾ full otherwise the cake may overflow
- allow all ingredients to achieve room temperature before measuring so your batter will be blended properly and not produce a dense cake
- the cake needs to be totally cool before you turn it on to a rack or lightly sugared plate
- it's a good idea to decide how you're going to decorate your cake before you choose which bundt pan to use, with all the cool shapes and sizes you don't want to cover up the funky designs
Ingredients in Cookies and Cream Cake
- box of white cake mix, 2 layer size, or whichever flavor you prefer
- oil
- eggs
- water
- cream filled cookies
Grandma's Icing
- butter
- milk
- salt
- vanilla
- powdered or icing sugar
How to make Grandma's Oreo Cookie Cake
In a large bowl combine cake mix, oil, eggs and water.
Beat on low and then medium for a few minutes until incorporated.
Gently fold in 1 ½ cups crushed cookies.
Prepare bundt pan with butter and then flour.
Pour cake batter into bundt pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes or a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool and place rack on top of bundt pan.
Flip and allow to totally cool.
Flip back onto serving plate.
Icing or Frosting
You have a choice between making an icing, or technically a frosting, just like grandma did. That being said I have included three bundt cake glazes because you can never have too many options!
The icing will cover the entire cake and the glazes will not.
In a large mixing bowl combine all of the ingredients. Blend together on low speed until smooth.
Making the Cake
Smear icing all over the cake. Sprinkle with 1 cup of crushed cookies. Serve and enjoy.
How to Glaze a Bundt Cake
I use a good sized resealable bag, add your glaze mixture to it and press it into one corner. Cut the tip off of that corner leaving an opening of about ¾ of an inch.
Hold bag above your totally cooled bundt cake and squeeze all of the thick glaze out slowly, at a steady pace, on to the middle of your cake, going around in a circle, trying not to stop, if possible.
As soon as you get back to where you began just continue on until your bag is empty or you believe you have enough glaze on your cake.
You need your glaze to be thick, yet easily stirred, as you want it to slowly run down the sides of your totally cooled cake while turning your plate or cake stand by hand, especially if you are like me and don't own a turntable.
If you want the glaze to run down a specific side of the cake, depending on your cakes pattern, just stop circling with your glaze for a quick moment, add a bit extra glaze and then keep on going in your circle pattern.
Add any decorations you want to at this time while your glaze is still wet. and allow the glaze to set and stiffen for at least an hour before serving.
Perfect Bundt Cake Glaze
Chocolate glaze or sometimes known as ganache is very easy to make.
- ½ cup heavy cream, heated
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Make chocolate glaze by whisking together chocolate chips and heated, simmering heavy cream until thick and smooth. Pour over your cake, then add decorations if desired. Let icing set and stiffen, then serve as desired.
Vanilla Bundt Cake Glaze
In my opinion the perfect glaze for a bundt cake is chocolate but I still have the need to know a vanilla because the rest of my family loves vanilla!
- 1 cup powdered or icing sugar
- 3-5 tablespoons heavy or whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir to combine until totally smooth. If the mixture is too thin, add more powdered sugar, a few tablespoons at a time. If the mixture is too thick, add more cream, a tablespoon or two at a time.
Cream Cheese Glaze
- 4 oz cream cheese
- ¼ cup butter
- 2 cups powdered/icing sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon milk
In a small bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
Pour out over your cake, and shake gently from side to side to ensure the glaze drips down.
What's the BEST kind of Bundt Cake pan to buy?
You are always smart to buy a nonstick cake pan of any shape or size, there are so many now out there for you to choose from! You don't have to spend a lot of money on a pan but I wouldn't buy the cheapest out there either!
I like this Cuisinart Chef's Classic Nonstick Bakeware Fluted Cake Pan and this Nordic Ware Platinum Collection Heritage Bundt Pan I bought recently because I loved the shape. Different and definitely spectacular looking!
There are so many to choose from that are perfect for everything, all holidays and every occasion you can think of. Some are so amazing you hate to start to decorate them!
If you have a minute, have a look at this Nordic Ware Blossom Bundt Pan and this Nordic Ware Brilliance Bundt Pan. Both would create such an amazing looking bundt cake that you might not want to even slice it.
There are so many more different shapes to choose from, it's just amazing. I won't bore you with showing you any more of them.
How do you prevent your cake from sticking to the bundt pan?
Bundt cakes have a reputation for sticking to the inside of the pan they were baked in. Non stick pans do work but as they age become much less reliable, even if properly taken care of.
Using shortening and then flour, NOT butter, will reduce the possibility of damaging your cake while attempting to remove it from the pan. Believe it or not but, butter can make the cake stick and sometimes act as an adhesive between the cake and the bundt pan.
Regardless, by thoroughly greasing and then flouring your pan you will eliminate any potential disasters or headaches with your cake.
I love using a pan coating product like Wilton’s Cake Release or if you want to buy two at a time like I do, have a look here. This product is incredible and so helpful to have around.
How to make your own non-stick
That being said, you can also easily make your own non-stick. Here's how: use EQUAL parts of all purpose flour, vegetable shortening and vegetable oil. It is shelf stable and works great!
You don't even need to make a big batch. For example, in this recipe, a few tablespoons of each ingredient, blended together and you will likely have only a little leftover, if any.
Using paper towel or a pastry brush, generously coat the inside of any pan you are using for your baking. Make sure to get into every nook and cranny, and you will thank me and never use anything else again. I am serious and urge you to give it a try.
You will definitely thank me just like I thanked the person that showed me. Hopefully you can take a moment and let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. I would love to hear!
