    Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie

My favorite meal on earth used to be my Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie.  I remember how excited I used to get watching her make it and watching it brown in the oven.

I used to ask her over and over again when it would be ready.  I'm sure I drove her crazy but she never even looked frustrated with  me.  She had the patience of a saint!

Eventually though she started surprising me with it!  I would be out on the farm doing something and return when I heard her bell.  Actually it was a big, heavy triangle.

    Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie

Regardless, we all knew that was the time to get running back to her home!  Either she got smarter or I got older because she didn't have to listen to all the questions over and over anymore.  About her pie anyways! My grandmother used to make her own pie crusts at first.  Then she switched and used refrigerated crescent dough because that was so much easier for her.

    Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie

I used the crescent dough for years but ever since they came out with the refrigerated pie crusts I use them instead.  Unbelievably easy and pretty tasty too!Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie is total comfort food for me but then we were very close and everything she taught me how to make makes me feel like that.  You can probably tell I will miss her until the day I die!

    Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie

I love the ground meat, truly any combination of meat or any kind you have handy will do and I assure you that few will notice with all of the other good stuff in it!  I like to use turkey and ground beef when I have it or just plain old ground beef, just like she used to make! The flavors in my Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie that are added to the ground meat make each slice taste and feel like a bacon cheeseburger.

You can easily add more of your favorite burger toppings when serving each slice.  I don't find it necessary but you just might!  Just remember it is always an option!

This recipe can easily feed a crowd or just a few, depending on the size of your slices, and don't forget many will want seconds!  I always found that one pie was not enough and with two pies I always had leftovers!

Don't get me wrong, the leftovers always got eaten, I just prefer a meal without any, whenever possible.  Don't you?

Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger PieIngredients in Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie

    • ground beef, pork, turkey, chicken or any combination
    • onion
    • bacon
    • ketchup
    • mustard
    • relish
    • salt
    • oregano
    • pepper
    • refrigerated pie crust
    • shredded cheese
    • cheese slices

How to make Grandma’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pie

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Cook bacon in a large skillet until almost crisp. Set aside on a paper towel lined plate.

Wipe out your skillet. In the same skillet cook ground beef until no longer pink and onions are tender.

    Drain if necessary.

Add ketchup, mustard, relish, cooked bacon, salt, oregano, pepper and 2 cups of cheese.  Stir until blended.

Open one package of your pie crust and form your pie shell.  Make sure all of your edges reach or hangover the side of your pie plate.

Dump beef mixture into shell. Sprinkle remaining 1 cup of cheese all over the top of the pie and then spread cheese slices on top.

Cover top of pie with second pie crust. Wrap extra top crust underneath bottom crust and press edges together so your pie is all sealed.  Pinch all around the edges with your thumb and forefinger to make a nice edge or flute.

Cut slits in the top of your pie, in a sort of star pattern, starting in the center of your pie.  Four or five slits will do to allow heat to escape.  Use a sharp knife and only cut through the dough.  You don't need to cut into the meat or filling.

    Bake for 20 minutes.

Remove pie from oven and cover the entire edge of your pie with tinfoil to prevent burning.

Bake for 20-30 more minutes. I have even left the pie in the oven for an additional 5 more minutes to brown the top crust even more while at my friends house.  This pie is ready once the crust is nicely browned.

Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving.  Serve and enjoy!

      4 stars
The flavor was 5 star. I used pre-baked shells I thawed. Had quite a time with half of the top crust as it was stuck to the aluminum pan . 1/2 of it was perfect & beautiful, the other half a hot mess. Not sure if I should of left frozen or what. Will make again, not sure if I will add a too crust or not. Flavor was really good.

Next time simply spray the lid/cover or foil with cooking spray so the top crust doesn’t stick! Don’t not include it and don’t cook from frozen. If you try this pie again cooking spray will solve your sticking problem. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We had a family emergency and I forgot I had a blog. Thank you for being with me on my food journey. All the best. Karin
