Ingredients
Below are the important ingredients needed to make these Rice Krispies Easter eggs. Three of the components are used in the base of any Krispies treat recipe!

- Marshmallows: I prefer mini marshmallows over regular ones because they melt much more quickly and evenly. These are important because they act as the binder for the Rice Krispies eggs.
- Butter: Not only does the butter add richness, but it also provides moisture to help the treats from drying out. I like to use unsalted so they don't have a salty flavor.
- Rice Krispies: Ensure you use fresh cereal for the best crunch, as stale cereal loses its crunch. Also, measure accurately because too much cereal won't hold together.
- Food coloring: I use vibrant spring colors like pink, purple, etc. Gel food coloring is best to preserve the consistency of the treats. Too much liquid coloring could thin it out. I use the same food coloring in this swirl Easter Cheesecake pie.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Change the shape: Use a silicone mold to make these Rice Krispies eggs a different shape to celebrate another occasion.
- Add drizzle: Try a drizzle of white chocolate or pastel candy melts on top of the eggs to enhance the presentation.
- Use sprinkles: Stick with Easter and stir in ¼ of pastel or themed sprinkles to the cereal mixture to give the eggs extra pops of color. If you want this recipe for another holiday or just spring, go with a generic shape.
How to Make Rice Krispies Easter Eggs
Here are the steps needed to make these Easter egg Rice Krispies treats. Work quickly so the marshmallow mixture doesn't seize! (If it does, you can stick it back in the microwave for a few seconds)

Step 1: Make the base. Add your butter and mini marshmallows to a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 1 minute, then heat in 15-second intervals until the mixture is melted and smooth.

Step 2: Add the vanilla. Stir in the vanilla extract for added flavor.

Step 3: Divide and color. Divide the marshmallow mixture into smaller bowls, based on how many colors you use (I used 4 colors, so 4 bowls). Start by adding 1-2 drops of color, and add more if needed to reach your desired color.

Step 4: Stir in cereal. After all the colors are mixed, divide the cereal evenly among the bowls and fold it until it's fully coated.

Step 5: Form the eggs. Form the cereal mixture into the shape of an egg, using about ¼ cup for each.

Step 6: Let them sit. Place all of the Easter eggs on a metal rack to cool and set fully. Now you can enjoy them with a cup of hot cocoa made with one of these Easter hot cocoa bombs.

Expert Tips
- Grease your hands: I like to spray my hands with a little cooking spray or rub them with a neutral oil before I handle the Rice Krispies Easter treats. This keeps the marshmallows from sticking to you.
- Shape the treats while warm: Ensure that you shape the treats into eggs right away because as soon as the marshmallow cools, you won't be able to mold it.
- Store them at room temperature: Keep these Rice Krispies eggs in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. Avoid keeping them in the fridge, as they will become hard and dense rather than crispy and chewy.

Recipe FAQs
Too much marshmallow or butter can prevent the treats from setting, so ensure that you measure them accurately. Also, if you overheat the marshmallows, it keeps them from setting. Watch the heat and remove the pot as soon as they fully melt.
They must fully cool and set before moving them. If they're still warm or a little sticky, this can cause color transfer. When you store them, use parchment in between the colors to further prevent them from bleeding together.
Yes! I like to wrap each egg in some plastic wrap before placing them all in an airtight container. You can freeze them for up to 3 months! Thaw them completely at room temperature before you serve them.
If there's not enough marshmallow and butter or too much cereal, this will make the treats dry and crumbly. It's also important to shape the treats gently because packing them too tightly can make them dry and dense.

Rice Krispies Easter Eggs
Equipment
- large microwave-safe mixing bowl
- 3-4 medium mixing bowls (you'll need one for every colour you are making)
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 10 ounces mini marshmallows
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 cups rice krispie cereal
- 3-4 different food colouring I recommend spring colours
Instructions
- Place the marshmallows, butter and vanilla extract in a large, microwave-safe mixing bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir the bowl. If the marshmallows have not fully melted, continue to melt in 15 second increments until fully melted. Stir the bowl between each increment. Add vanilla and stir until blended.
- Arrange your medium mixing bowls. If you are making 3 different colours, you'll need 3 bowls… if making 4 colours, you'll need 4 bowls, etc.
- Divide your marshmallow mixture, evenly, amongst the bowls. I am making 4 colours so I am dividing it 4 ways.
- You'll need to work quickly because the marshmallows begin to set almost immediately. Add a few drops of food colouring to one of your bowls and stir to get the colour you would like to see in your Easter egg. Add the other colours to the remaining bowls and stir.
- Divide the Rice Krispie cereal evenly amongst the 4 bowls. Stir to fully coat the cereal.
- Now we are going to get our hands a little dirty. Spray your hands with cooking spray. Spoon approximately ¼ cup of the coloured rice krispie treats into your hands and press it into an egg shape. Lay the egg on a sheet of parchment or sprayed rack. Continue doing this for each colour until all the treats have been formed into Easter eggs. Let the eggs stand to set for at least 20 minutes before enjoying.
Notes
- Avoid overheating the marshmallow mixture to ensure the Easter egg Rice Krispies set and aren't overly sticky.
- Allow them to cool fully before moving them to prevent the color from bleeding.
- Grease your hands generously to help keep the Rice Krispies from sticking to them.
