Ingredients
You only need a short grocery list for these Easter dirt cups - mostly pantry staples plus a few fun Easter decorations. The magic is the texture: creamy pudding, crunchy Oreo dirt, and a festive topper.

Chocolate Pudding Layer
- Instant chocolate pudding mix - fast, foolproof chocolate base that sets quickly.
- Cold whole milk - makes the pudding extra creamy and cold milk helps pudding thicken properly.
Dirt Layer
- Oreo cookies: Creates the "dirt" that Easter dirt cups require
For Assembly & Garnish
- Chocolate "Carrot" Strawberries: A tasty change from common candy egg toppers.
- Totally Dry Fresh Strawberries: Dry berries ensure the chocolate coating will stick.
- Orange Candy Melts: Turns strawberries into carrots.
- Clear Cups or Jars (6-8 oz size): Allows visible layers.
- Optional thyme sprigs or oregano: Adds a "garden" look to your dirt cup.
See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.
Variations
- Skip the Carrot Patch: Top each cup with a bunny or chick Peep, candy eggs or a mixture instead.
- Different Pudding: Use vanilla pudding or your favorite flavor for a different look.
- Add Worms To Dirt: Add gummy worms peeking out of the Oreo crumbs.
Instructions
These Easter dirt cups are simple, quick, and totally stress-free. You're basically making pudding, crushing cookies, and layering everything into cups. If you can whisk and sprinkle, you can make these.

Make the pudding: Whisk the pudding mix and cold milk in a large bowl until smooth and thickened. Let it sit about 5 minutes to fully set.

Make the Oreo dirt: Crush Oreos into fine crumbs using a food processor, or seal them in a bag and crush with a rolling pin.

Make carrot strawberries: Melt orange candy melts in 20-30 second microwave bursts, stirring until smooth. Hold each strawberry by the leafy top and dip into the orange coating. Let excess drip off.

Place on parchment, and drizzle a little extra orange coating for "carrot lines" if desired. Allow to set and right before serving press into dirt cup with a herb for a total garden look.
Recipe Tips
- Use very cold milk: it helps instant pudding thicken fast and smooth.
- Dry strawberries completely: water makes candy melts seize or slide off.
- Crush Oreos fine: fine crumbs look more like "dirt" and layer nicely.
- Assemble like a pro: pipe pudding into cups using a zip-top bag with the corner snipped for cleaner layers.
- Top last-minute: add carrot strawberries and herbs right before serving so they stay fresh and pretty.

4 Recipe FAQs
Yes! Assemble the pudding and Oreo layers up to 24 hours ahead and keep covered in the refrigerator. Add the carrot strawberries (and any fresh herb garnish) right before serving for best results.
Whole milk gives the creamiest texture, but 2% will still work. Avoid non-dairy milk unless the pudding box says it's compatible, because it may not turn out as thick.
Put the cookies in a resealable bag, seal it, and crush with a rolling pin, kitchen hammer or the bottom of a heavy glass until you get fine crumbs.
Absolutely. Peeps bunnies/chicks and candy eggs are classic Easter dirt cup toppers. You can even do a mix: a Peep plus a sprinkle of mini eggs for extra color.
Not recommended (pudding texture can become watery after thawing).

Easter Dirt Cups
Equipment
- 6 6-8 oz jars
Ingredients
Chocolate Pudding Layer
- 2 boxes (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
- 4 cups cold whole milk
Dirt Layer
- 15 Oreo cookies finely crushed
Chocolate "Carrot" Strawberries
- 6 fresh strawberries washed and completely dry
- ½ cup orange candy melts
For Assembly & Garnish
- 6 clear cups or jars 6-8 oz size
- optional thyme sprigs
Instructions
- Prepare the chocolate pudding by whisking the pudding mix and cold milk together in a large bowl until smooth and thickened. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to fully set.
- While the pudding sets, crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs using a food processor or by sealing them in a bag and crushing with a rolling pin.
- To make the carrot strawberries, melt the orange candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well between each, until smooth. Hold each strawberry by the leafy top and dip it into the melted orange chocolate, gently twisting to coat. Let the excess drip off, then place on parchment paper. If desired, drizzle a small amount of the remaining melted orange chocolate over the strawberries to create carrot-like texture lines. Allow the strawberries to set completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
- To assemble the dirt cups, spoon a layer of chocolate pudding into each cup leaving space for the dirt layer. Add a generous layer of crushed Oreo crumbs.
- Just before serving, gently press one chocolate carrot strawberry into the center of each cup. Tuck a small thyme sprig slightly behind or beside the strawberry so it looks like greenery sprouting from the soil.
Notes
Crushing the Oreos very finely gives the most realistic "dirt" appearance and a smoother texture when layered with the pudding.
Let the chocolate coated strawberries set fully before placing them on the pudding to prevent melting or smudging.
For the cleanest presentation, add the strawberry carrots just before serving rather than storing them already inserted. Storage
Store assembled dirt cups (without strawberries) covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Chocolate-covered strawberries are best made the day of serving.
If needed, store dipped strawberries separately in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours and add to the cups right before serving.
