Ingredients & Substitutions
These easy sugar blossom cookies only use a few basic ingredients, most of which I’d bet you already have in your kitchen right now. The major players are below, but you'll find the complete list of ingredients in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- All-purpose flour - You can also use gluten-free flour if needed.
- Granulated sugar - Plain white sugar is the most neutral in flavor. Feel free to swap in organic cane sugar for a less-processed alternative.
- Unsalted butter - You can use salted butter instead, but omit the added salt if you do. You’re also welcome to make them dairy-free by swapping in your favorite plant-based butter.
- Egg - I used one large egg as my binder. Let it come to room temperature to make mixing it into the dough easier.
- Vanilla extract - Vanilla is a universal crowd-pleaser, but feel free to swap in almond, coconut, peppermint, lemon, banana, maple, orange, or rum extract instead.
- Milk - Any style of dairy milk will work here. You’re also welcome to use
- Colorful Sugar/Sprinkles - I like to use a wide variety of different sanding sugars and sprinkles to make my Easter blossom sugar cookies look like a bona fide bouquet. Feel free to use whatever colors you prefer!
- Hershey Kisses - These classic milk chocolate treats are standard for making blossom cookies, but feel free to use other flavors of Kisses, or swap in mini peanut butter cups, chocolate-covered caramels (Rolos), Turtles, or Bounty minis to use as the center of your blossoms, or add several semi-sweet or white chocolate chips, caramel chips, or peanut butter chips arranged like sunflower seeds.
Optional Variations
While I love making these sugar cookies blossoms just the way the recipe is written, there’s LOTS of room for you to make them your own. Here are just a few variations to consider:
- Gluten-Free - Use your favorite cup-for-cup all-purpose gluten-free flour blend instead.
- Vegan - Swap in plant-based butter and your favorite vegan egg substitute (e.g. JUST Eggs, ¼ cup of applesauce or mashed banana, or a flax egg.)
- Get Zesty - Add lemon, lime, grapefruit, or orange zest to your dough for a pop of citrusy flavor.
- Go Nuts - Add your favorite chopped nuts to the cookie dough or sprinkle on top after baking for an extra crunchy texture.
- Mix-Ins - Add mini chocolate chips, crushed pretzels, tiny candy decorations like mini M&M's, or dried fruit like apricots, cherries, or craisins to the cookie dough before baking them
- Color Coordinate - Use colorful sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored decorating sugar crystals to coordinate with any occasion, any time of year. (Think: purple, orange, and black for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, blue and silver for Hannukah, red and blue for 4th of July, your school colors, or whatever colors you’re using for any party.)
- Dip Them - Use melted white chocolate to dip the cookies into, promptly lay them on parchment, and decorate them with sprinkles before the chocolate has set.
- Cheater’s Blossoms - Feel free to swap in your favorite pre-made sugar cookie dough for an even easier treat!
How To Make Hershey Sugar Cookie Blossoms
This sugar cookie blossoms recipe is so easy to make, you'll be done in no time! The overview is below, but you can find the complete instructions in the recipe card at the end of the post.
Step 1: Combine the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another bowl.
Step 2: Mix the wet and dry ingredients together until the dough forms. Adjust the thickness of the dough with more milk or flour — it should be the consistency of playdough.
Step 3: Scoop out dough with a cookie scoop or tablespoon, roll into a smooth ball, and roll in colored sugar.
Step 4: Bake until the edges begin to turn light brown. Then, place a Hershey Kiss in the center of each cookie. Enjoy!
Storage Instructions
Countertop: Store in an air-tight container for up to a week.
Refrigerator: Store for up to 2 weeks in an air-tight container.
Freezer: Store for up to 3 months in an air-tight, freezer-safe container.Make Ahead: You can make the cookie dough ahead of time and store it for up to 5 days in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer before baking. If you decide to freeze it, I suggest rolling it into individual balls first for easier shaping.
Serving Suggestions
These tasty spring blossom cookies are perfect with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee. They also make a great addition to a dessert table alongside sweet treats like:
- Copycat Subway Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Mermaid Cupcakes
- Sunflower Cupcakes
- Butterscotch Caramel Cashew Bars
- Chunky Monkey Bars
Expert Tips
- The dough should have the consistency of playdough. You should be able to easily roll balls between your hands, without any sticking to your fingers.
- If the dough is too sticky to form balls, add 1-2 Tablespoons flour until it can be handled.
- If the dough is too dry and you have to force dough balls together, add the optional 1-2 Tablespoons milk until desired consistency is reached.
- If your dough spreads too thin in the oven, it was likely your dough was too “wet”. They likely needed more flour and didn’t get the proper consistency before rolling. Alternatively, you could try chilling the dough.
- Use a cookie scoop for evenly-sized treats.
- The cookies will still be soft when they come out of the oven and will firm up as they cool. That is why you need to have your chocolate candies ready for pressing in right away!
Top Tip
Unwrap all of your Hershey Kisses ahead of time so you are ready to press them into cookies as soon as they come out of the oven.

It was likely the dough was too “wet” and needed a 1 or 2 more tablespoons of flour to get proper play dough like consistency before rolling.
The edges should begin to get golden brown and the shine will be completely gone from the cookies.
Nope! This is seriously the most fuss-free cookie recipe I’ve ever made. You can mix all the wet ingredients (butter, egg, vanilla, and milk) in one bowl, all the dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar) in another, then mix the two together until combined.
