Jello Sugar Cookies are soft and chewy cookies that are easy to make. Then these delicious strawberry sugar cookies are topped with a simple buttercream frosting. Frosted Sugar cookies are very popular in my household. My family loves the softness of the sugar cookies with jello powder and the sweet buttercream frosting that is spread on top of these pink sugar cookies.
Another great thing about Jello Sugar Cookies is that they take on the fruity flavor of the Jello that you use to make the cookie dough. I used strawberry because it’s a family favorite flavor.
I have had both regular soft sugar cookies and strawberry sugar cookies. Let me just tell you that strawberry sugar cookies take the flavor of the soft and chewy cookies to a whole different level.
I love the sweet and fruity taste of these frosted sugar cookies. The buttercream frosting on top of these soft sugar cookies made with jello really brings out the strawberry flavor from the Jello.
Not only does the Jello add yummy flavor to these cookies, it also makes them beautifully colored. Who doesn’t love pink cookies?
They always say that we eat with our eyes first, and the better something looks the more likely we are to enjoy the item that we are eating. This jello sugar cookies recipe is no different. These cookies look so pretty and taste extra delicious.
Can you imagine a better cookie for a Valentines Day celebration?
What are Jello Sugar Cookies
Jello sugar cookies are a different take on the traditional sugar cookie. This recipe starts with a regular sugar cookie recipe, but then we take the cookies up a notch by adding in an additional ingredient which is Jello.
Adding in the Jello to your sugar cookie dough adds both flavor and color. Usually a delicious fruit flavor and the jello makes your sugar cookies a beautiful color. Just a note about adding in the Jello to your sugar cookie dough, you do not need to mix the Jello with water.
You just need the dry Strawberry Jello mix.
Can I freeze Frosted Sugar Cookies
Yes, you can freeze these frosted sugar cookies. To freeze your cookies there are several tips you should know. These frosted sugar cookies can be frozen, frosted or unfrosted. I like to freeze my sugar cookies frosted so that they are ready to eat.
In order to properly freeze your sugar cookies, allow your cookies to cool completely before you place them in containers to freeze.
When freezing your cookies you have two different options. You can wrap your cookies individually tightly in plastic wrap. Then freeze them wrapped.
This will allow you to eat your cookies one at a time instead of worrying about eating a whole batch within a week. Not that eating cookies every day for a week is a hardship at all.
If you do not want to freeze your pink sugar cookies individually, then you can freeze your cookies together in an airtight container. You can use a freezer bag or a freezer safe container of your choice.
I recommend waiting to freeze your cookies until the frosting has hardened slightly.
How long can I store Frosted Sugar Cookies
These frosted sugar cookies made with jello should store just fine for up to one week. Store your cookies on the counter in a sealed, air tight container. The longer that your cookies sit the harder and drier they will become.
Can I make these with a different flavor
Absolutely, you can use any flavor of Jello that your family prefers to make this jello sugar cookies recipe. No matter which flavor that you use, the buttercream frosting should compliment all flavors nicely.
You don't need a drop of food coloring to make these pink sugar cookies. Red jello crates this amazing color. Imagine a blue cookie? Orange cookie? The possibilities are truly endless.
What kind of frosting do I use for these Pink Sugar cookies
For this pink sugar cookie recipe, I used a homemade buttercream like frosting. There is no better frosting in my opinion for sugar cookies than a buttercream frosting.
Do I need to chill this cookie dough
No, there’s no need to chill this sugar cookie dough. I do caution however, if you want to roll out your sugar cookies with jello powder so that you can use cookie cutters to shape them instead of making dough balls, then you will need to chill your cookie dough.
This Jello sugar cookie dough is very soft, so if you are planning to roll it out you will need to chill for your dough for at least two hours to firm it up first.
I don’t have a cookie scoop what else can I use
No cookie scoop in your kitchen supplies? No worries you have options. First, you can use a small ice cream scoop. The ice cream scoop will work just as well as a cookie scoop.
Your second option is to just roll the cookie dough into balls with your hands. Not hard to do at all. If you find that the sugar cookie dough is sticking to your hands too much if you are rolling it by hand, simply chill the sugar cookie dough for at least 30 minutes and then try again.

Notes
- Do not melt your butter. The butter for your sugar cookies needs to be softened, not melted. Softened means at room temperature. Melted butter will cause your cookies to be thin.
- Use a glass baking pan. A metal baking sheet will cause your sugar cookie bottoms to brown more. A glass baking pan will help keep your cookies soft and chewy.
- Be careful not to overbake your cookies. Bake your sugar cookies until their edges start to slightly brown. Overbaking your cookies can cause them to harden and become tough.
- Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent your cookies from sticking. When you use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat it will help remove your cookies smoothly and easily from the baking sheet. No need to scrape your cookies off the pan when you use parchment paper or a baking mat.
