A good Chicken Club Sandwich is one of my all-time favorite foods. From the toasted bread to the variety of meat and cheese and a good slathering of mayo. It takes just 10 minutes to prepare this dinner classic at home, so you can enjoy it anytime you like.

The juicy chicken and bacon make this an amazing sandwich, but adding ham takes it over the top. Using two cheeses is required if you want the flavor to come out perfectly, and I adore the nutty flavor of a good Swiss and the sharpness of cheddar. You can totally make it your own, but I’m a huge fan of making it as is.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s customizable. I adore sandwich recipes because you have the opportunity to get creative with the toppings and condiments. I enjoy the base ingredients of club sandwiches, but sometimes I like to add mustard or pickles, for example.
- It’s a great way to use leftovers. I love to use rotisserie chicken to make a sliced chicken sandwich. It’s one of my favorite recipes for using up any food before it spoils (like extra deli meat or lettuce and tomato).
- It’s super quick to make. It takes just a few minutes to prepare a tasty club sandwich with chicken, ham, and bacon. I have all the components set up and ready, so you just need to assemble the sandwich before you devour it.
Ingredients
Below are all the components needed to make this layered chicken sandwich. It’s fairly basic but still delicious! These ingredients are easily found at any grocery store.

- Sandwich bread: This can be any sturdy sliced bread that you want. I use white, but whole wheat works just as well.
- Mayonnaise: For me, this is a key condiment for a classic chicken club sandwich. If you don't like mayo, try yellow or honey mustard instead.
- Cheese: I like the combination of Swiss and cheddar cheese, but you are free to you any variety of sliced cheese that you want—even double cheddar would be awesome!
- Lettuce and tomato: I keep it simple and add just crispy iceberg lettuce and juicy tomato slices to my club sandwich.
- Meats: I use sliced rotisserie chicken, cooked bacon, and deli ham. Feel free to switch up and use any meats you prefer to create a unique club.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- BBQ: Try sliced barbecue chicken and BBQ sauce to make a smoky version of this sandwich.
- Italian: Make an Italian club with sliced ham, salami, and pepperoni with provolone and mozzarella.
- Vegetarian: You may even go vegetarian and swap the meats for sliced avocado, cucumbers, and bell peppers.
How to Make Chicken Club Sandwiches
Here are the steps you’ll need to assemble the perfect club sandwich with chicken. To get started, toast all of your bread slices. I do this to help the structure of the sandwich, and it creates a barrier to keep the mayo from soaking through.

Step 1: Add mayo. Grab your first slice of toasted bread and spread it generously with mayonnaise.

Step 2: Season. Sprinkle black pepper on top.

Step 3: Assemble the first layer. Layer the sliced cheese, lettuce, tomato, and chicken on top.

Step 4: Add more bread and mayo. Add more mayo and black pepper to the middle slice and place it on the chicken.

Step 5: Layer the remaining ingredients. Add more cheese, lettuce, ham, bacon, and tomato to make the second layer of ingredients.

Step 6: Finish with the last slice. Smear more mayo and sprinkle black pepper on the final toasted bread slice. Place it on top, and the sandwich is ready to eat!
Recipe Tips
- Storage directions: Store your club sandwich tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or foil in a Ziploc bag for 1-2 days.
- Skip the third slice of bread: make a smaller version and omit the third slice of bread if you like. I keep the third slice because it reminds me of a diner-style chicken club.
- Pat the produce dry: Ensure the lettuce and tomato are patted dry before you add them to the sandwich. They carry a lot of moisture and will make the bread soggy.

- I like to serve this sandwich recipe with Greek lentil feta salad if I want something a little more hearty and unique.
- Potato chips are lovely, but if you want to try something new, healthy pita chips or potato skin chips are good ideas.
- Make it spicy with a couple of dashes of Scotch Bonnet hot sauce.

Recipe FAQs
Of course! Cook the chicken ahead and turn this into a baked or grilled chicken club sandwich recipe. Even sliced deli chicken would work in a pinch.
Sure! There are endless possibilities, too. Sliced red onion, pickles, sliced banana peppers, and vinaigrette are just a few options.
I highly recommend against it. When the sandwich thaws, it will be full of moisture that will make the bread set and soggy. If you must, keep it in the fridge for a day or two.
