Air fryer taquitos, a copycat Taco Bell recipe, are one of my favorite treats to serve up for snacks, parties, and even for a taco bar on Taco Tuesday. They're a healthy alternative to fried taquitos and so easy to make! Most important, everyone loves them!

    Air Fryer Taquitos

This recipe was inspired by my Taco Bell copycat recipe on Kitchen Divas, and pairs well with a wide variety of sauces including, avocado ranch, green verde sauce, and spicy mayo sauce.

If you like these taquitos in the air fryer, you might also enjoy these easy air fryer recipes for pizza rolls or pretzel dogs.

    Ingredients

All you need are four simple ingredients to make these homemade copycat taquitos.

    • Flour tortillas
    • Cooked and shredded chicken
    • Taco seasoning
    • Shredded Colby jack cheese

See the recipe card further down on the page for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

    Instructions

These air fryer taquitos are easy to make in just a few easy steps.

    Step 1: Prep the Tortillas

Mix together the chicken and taco seasoning in a bowl. Sprinkle one-quarter cup each of shredded chicken and cheese over the top of each tortilla.

    Step 2: Roll Them Up

Tightly roll them up and place them seam side down on the counter or a tray. Repeat with all the tortillas.

Step 3: Cook in the Air Fryer

Place rolled taquitos into a greased or sprayed air fryer basket, seam side down.

Cook them four at a time to avoid overcrowding the basket. Cook at 400ºF for 6 minutes or until the tops begin to brown.

    Step 4: Serve Them Up

When cooked, remove from the air fryer and serve with your choice of salsa, sour cream, guacamole, or other fun sauces.

    Substitutions

Don't have the correct ingredients on hand? Or want to change something up? Here are some helpful tips for you to change how you make Taco Bell taquitos.

    • Chicken - Make air fryer taquitos with cooked ground beef, shredded beef, shredded pork or even chopped shrimp.
    • Colby jack cheese - Swap it out with any flavorful shredded cheese such as Monterey jack or sharp chedddar.
    • Vegetarian - Replace the chicken with black beans or even refried beans.

    Variations

Want to personalize your Taco Bell taquitos recipe? Here are some of my tried and true tips for changing up this recipe.

    • Spicy - Sprinkle chopped jalapenos or green chiles over the top of the shredded cheese and chicken before rolling up the taquitos.
    • Deluxe - Use 2 tablespoons chicken, 1 tablespoon black beans and 1 tablespoon of salsa for the filling.
    • Gluten-free - Swap out the flour tortillas with corn tortillas to make gluten-free taquitos.

    Storage

Taco Bell taquitos are best eaten right away but if you end up with leftovers you can store them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Reheat in the oven or air fryer at 350° F until heated through.

    Tips

Here are some of my top tips for making the best air fryer taquitos.

    • Don't overstuff the tortillas with chicken and cheese, this makes them more difficult to roll.
    • Place the taquitos into the air fryer seam side down so they don't come in open while cooking.
    • Don't crowd the taquitos in the air fryer basket. Leave plenty of room for the air to circulate around the taquitos for the best results.
    • Pick up a rotisserie chicken and shred it to save some time when prepping the chicken for taquitos.

    FAQ

Do you have questions about making Taco Bell air fryer taquitos? Here are some of the most commonly asked questions I get about this recipe.

Can I make these in the oven?

Yes, simply place the taquitos on a baking tray seam side down and bake at 350° F for 10-12 minutes. Flip them over halfway through the cooking time.

Can I make taquitos in advance?

Yes, roll them up and lay them out on a baking tray seam side down. Place in the freezer and allow them to freeze overnight. Once they are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container and store them for up to three months. When you're ready to cook them, remove the amount you want and place the frozen taquitos in the air fryer and cook until heated through. Since they are frozen you will need to extend the cooking time by 2-4 minutes.

Why are my taquitos coming open in the air fryer?

There are a couple of things to troubleshoot if the tortillas don't stay rolled up. First, it's important to roll the tortillas tightly to keep them from coming open. Also, overstuffing the tortillas can make them less tightly rolled and easier to open up. Also, be sure to place them seam side down so the seam is secure making them stay rolled up.
