This no-bake old fashioned chocolate pie recipe is rich, creamy, and so chocolatey. It has all the flavor and texture of chocolate mousse with far less effort.

No Bake Chocolate Pie slice served on a white plate with a fork.

I've loved these cream pies my entire life. I remember eating my grandma's chocolate pie version of chocolate mousse pie and her allowing me to lick the bowl. Instant puddings were so popular at the time and this was a long time ago.

I loved chocolate pudding so much and she loved me because she wasn't generally the type to allow bowl licking. I wish you could see the giant smile on my face right now as I write about her.

Besides my husband, son, and a few select others, she was and still is my favorite human. EVER.

This chocolate mousse pie always reminds me of my no-bake peanut butter pie recipe that's just like my grandma used to make too. If you love the flavors of chocolate and peanut butter you might also enjoy this chocolate peanut butter trifle. Or want another delicious "No Bake recipe" try our Cherry Cream Cheese Pie (No Bake).

    Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie Ingredients

You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this chocolate cream pie recipe. You'll find everything easily at your local grocery store.

All the ingredients needed to make easy chocolate mouse pie on the table.
    • Graham Cracker Pie Crust: Use a chocolate crust, Oreo cookie crust or a ready to bake traditional baked pie shell or baked pie crust. Use a gluten-free pie crust if desired. We're keeping things simple and use a premade graham cracker crust but all work great.
    • Instant chocolate pudding mix: The trick to making chocolate pie filling in a no-bake pie! You can use just about any flavor of pudding -- just make sure it's instant!
    • Milk: Use whole milk for the richest flavor. You can use evaporated milk, almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, or soy milk as well but they will change the richness of the pudding mixture.
    • Heavy whipping cream: We're splurging here to make a homemade for fresh whipped cream that mixes into the chocolate pudding to make it lighter and more like mousse.
    • Whipped topping: For the top of the pie. Use light or low fat to reduce some calories.
    • Mini Hershey bars: To garnish over the top of your chocolate pie no-bake recipe.

See the recipe card below for exact quantities of each ingredient.

    Storage

Fridge: This old fashioned chocolate pie can be refrigerated for up to 4 days. It might make it to 5 days but our pie never lasts that long.

Freeze: If you know in advance you want to freeze this pie, skip adding the whipped topping for easier freezing. Wrap it tightly with plastic freezer wrap and then aluminum foil or a heavy-duty freezer bag with as much air removed as possible for up to 2 months.
