    • Cinnamon Hot Chocolate

During the holidays, I love making and enjoying my peppermint mocha or caramel mocha, both of which have beautiful, rich flavors.

But of course, this time, I wanted to try something unique, with a bit of spice added in, and I might have just created the ultimate Christmas hot chocolate recipe!

Why You’ll Love This Hot Chocolate With Cinnamon Recipe

    • Ready in 10 minutes: With just a few pantry staples and minutes of kitchen time, you’ll have this comforting drink ready.
    • Perfect holiday drink: It has the perfect deep, chocolate flavor with a hint of earthy cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s absolutely irresistible.
    • Customizable: You can also customize the drink as per your dietary preferences and top it with your choice of toppings to take it to the next level.

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make a cinnamon hot chocolate on the table before preparing.
    • Chocolate: Use the best quality chocolate you can find, as it really makes a difference in how the flavors turn out. I used milk chocolate chips. I also used some unsweetened cocoa powder for that rich, deep flavor.
    • Sugar: We're adding some sugar to sweeten the flavor but you can easily use less or leave it out if you prefer a less sweet hot chocolate.
    • Milk: Milk is the base of the hot chocolate. I would recommend choosing whole milk or 2% milk for that rich and creamy consistency.
    • Spices: I used a mixture of ground cinnamon and nutmeg to lend the hot chocolate its unique spiced flavor.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Make it dark: Want your hot chocolate with cinnamon to have a deeper chocolate flavor? Swap the milk chocolate chips with dark chocolate chips or use a mix of both.
    • Add fun toppings: Experiment with fun toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream or even just a drizzle of some homemade caramel sauce or chocolate sauce. Sometimes, I also like to drizzle my butter pecan syrup if I have it at hand for some nuttiness.
    • Vegan hot chocolate: Swap the milk in the recipe for almond milk or any other plant-based milk of your choice.
    • Spice swap: You can also swap the nutmeg for some cardamom powder if you want to. The spice works beautifully with the cinnamon and lends an incredible aroma to the hot chocolate.

How to Make Cinnamon Hot Chocolate

To make the cinnamon-flavored hot chocolate, start by getting all your ingredients ready.

Milk and chocolate added to a small pot to heat.

Step 1: Add the chocolate to warm milk. Warm the milk in a pot over medium heat. Once the milk is warm, add in all the ingredients.

Chocolate is melted and mixed into the milk.

Step 2: Whisk. Whisk well until the chocolate melts. Make sure the heat is on low.

The spiced hot chocolate is being poured into a mug with another mug in the background.

Step 3: Pour into cups. Pour the spiced hot chocolate into cups.

Two mugs of cinnamon hot chocolate on the table with the pot to the side.

Step 4: Top and serve. Top the hot chocolate with some whipped cream, a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of cinnamon powder or your favorite toppings and serve immediately.

    Recipe Tips

    • Deepen the flavor: Use a mix of white and brown sugar to add some extra depth of flavor to the hot chocolate.
    • Use a pot: You may be tempted to skip using a pot and just warm the milk in the microwave, especially if you’re making this for a single serving. You can, but be careful not to burn it, and keep pausing at every 30-second interval.
    • Extra creamy: To make the hot chocolate extra creamy, swap the milk in the recipe for some heavy cream. It just adds an amazing luxurious texture and also thickens its consistency.

If you love this hot chocolate recipe, you've got to try this my hot chocolate bombs too!

    Storage Directions

    • Storing: You can store your leftover hot chocolate in a container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, and reheat it whenever you want to enjoy it.
    • Reheating: Reheat the hot chocolate in the microwave, pausing at every 30 second interval or just warm it up in a small pot over medium heat.

    Serving Suggestions

I love making this hot chocolate on a cold winter night, after a hearty dinner of holiday roast beef or honey mustard ham. I usually team up my main with some classic mashed potatoes or this mashed potato casserole, a veggie side like honey maple carrots or carrots lyonnaise and some air fried dinner rolls to finish it all up.

If I’m having my hot chocolate at any other time of the day, I enjoy it with some cookies. During the holidays, I turn to my peppermint flavored cookies or salted chocolate cookies. They both have the perfect flavors that complement the hot chocolate well!
