Homemade sauces are quick and easy to whip up, especially when they contain simple ingredients that don't require any prep. This copycat blooming onion sauce consists of condiments like mayonnaise and spices like garlic powder and paprika. I love a little horseradish in mine, just to take it over the top!

If you are looking for more tasty dipping sauces, I recommend buffalo ranch sauce and honey mustard mayo.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • It's ready fast: It only takes a few minutes to mix up some of this copycat blooming onion sauce.
    • It's great to make ahead: You can make this in advance with ease! Just stir all the ingredients and keep the bowl covered in the fridge. As it chills, the flavors develop even more, too.
    • It's inexpensive: This is a cheap onion petal sauce that uses common ingredients to create tangy, bold flavors.

    Ingredients

All the components needed for this sauce for a blooming onion are listed below. You can find all of these things at any grocery store, and you likely have a lot of them in your kitchen already.

Ingredients to make this sauce on a table.
    • Condiments: My version of the famous Outback onion sauce, mayonnaise, sour cream, and ketchup. Combined, they create a creamy yet tangy base with a hint of sweetness. It's perfect!
    • Horseradish: This is optional, but I like to use it when making this sauce because it adds spice and zest.
    • Spices: I use paprika for smokiness, oregano, garlic powder, etc. I don't get too fancy, but I like the sauce to be well-seasoned and balanced.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Honey mustard: Swap the ketchup for honey mustard for a sweet and extra tangy version.
    • Lemon pepper: Use some lemon pepper seasoning to really make the dipping sauce pop.
    • Dairy-free: Try vegan mayo and dairy-free sour cream to make a dairy-free sauce.

How to Make Blooming Onion Sauce

It takes just two simple steps to put together this homemade blooming onion sauce. It's so quick, yet so tasty!

All the ingredients combined in a bowl.

Step 1: Add the ingredients. Combine all of the ingredients listed in this blooming onion sauce recipe in a mixing bowl.

All the ingredients mixed in a bowl.

Step 2: Mix and chill. Give it all a good stir and then cover it, and pop it in the fridge until you're ready to serve it. Enjoy it with this air fryer blooming onion!

    Recipe Tips

    • Refrigeration directions: Keep any extra bloomin onion sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
    • Whisk the leftovers well: There will be some natural separation as the sauce sits in the fridge. Give it a good whisk before you serve it, and it will be just fine.
    • Try Greek yogurt: If you don't like sour cream, try Greek yogurt instead!

    • Try it as a spread on a turkey club wrap or salmon sliders to add tangy, spicy flavor.
    • This dip is a lovely ketchup alternative for these air fryer steak fries.
    • Enjoy it with seafood like shrimp! I highly recommend dipping lemon garlic broiled shrimp skewers in it!

    Recipe FAQs

Can I freeze leftover Outback blooming onion sauce?

No, the texture and consistency change a lot after it thaws. The dairy separates and doesn't mix correctly.

How can I make the flavor less sharp?

Skip the horseradish and go easy on some of the spices, like the cayenne pepper. That can tone down the sharp, spicy flavors.

Can I make the sauce thinner?

Sure! Omit the sour cream or use half the amount, and more mayonnaise. Mayo has a lighter consistency than sour cream.
