All of the ingredients needed to make sour cream chicken in bowls on a table
    • Chicken breasts: The hearty protein base that becomes juicy and tender while baking.
    • Mozzarella cheese: Adds creamy melted cheesiness between the chicken and sauce.
    • Sour cream: Creates the rich tangy creamy topping that defines this recipe.
    • Parmesan cheese: Adds salty savory depth and helps the topping brown beautifully.
    • Garlic powder: Gives savory flavor without overpowering the sauce.
    • Onion powder: Adds warm subtle sweetness and depth.
    • Oregano: Brings classic Italian-style herbal flavor.
    • Basil: Brightens the creamy richness with aromatic freshness.
    • Salt and pepper: Essential for balanced seasoning.
    • Parsley: Optional but adds fresh color and brightness.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Flavor boosts: Add crispy bacon, sautรฉed mushrooms, zucchini or fresh spinach beneath the sour cream sauce.
    • Cheese swaps: Use sharp cheddar for a bolder flavor, pepper jack for a little heat, Monterey Jack or provolone for a nice creamy melt depending on your flavor preference.
    • Easy seasoning twist: Stir ranch seasoning into the sour cream mixture for a tangy flavor upgrade or smoked paprika for deeper smoky flavor.
    • Protein and low-carb options: Swap chicken breasts for boneless thighs as they often stay juicier and more tender, add broccoli, or serve over cauliflower mash for a lower-carb meal.

How to Make Sour Cream Chicken

This easy sour cream chicken recipe comes together in just a few simple steps, making it perfect for busy weeknights. The creamy cheesy topping keeps the chicken tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF and lightly spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Step 5: Cover chicken with sauce. Spread the mixture over top of the mozzarella cheese on the chicken.
Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the chicken reaches 165 F at its thickest point.

Step 6: Bake and rest. Remove from the oven and let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired, and serve with roasted broccoli and carrots and bread.

    Expert Tips

    • Use evenly sized chicken pieces: Thin, evenly sized chicken breasts cook more consistently and stay tender and juicy throughout.
    • Shred your own cheese: Freshly shredded mozzarella and parmesan melt smoother, taste better, and create a creamier sauce than pre-shredded cheese.
    • Choose full-fat sour cream: Full-fat sour cream gives the richest texture and helps prevent the sauce from becoming watery or separating while baking.
    • Cook to the right temperature: Chicken is perfectly cooked when it reaches 165ยฐF at the thickest point, keeping it both safe and juicy.
    • Let it rest before serving: Giving the chicken a few minutes to rest helps the juices redistribute so every bite stays moist and flavorful.
    • Season generously: Chicken breasts need proper seasoning to stay flavorful beneath the creamy cheesy topping.
    • Avoid overbaking: Even with a creamy sauce, overcooked chicken can dry out quickly, so keep an eye on your baking time.
    • Use the right cut of chicken: Thick whole chicken breasts can take 50-60 minutes to cook. For best results, use thin-cut chicken breasts, chicken cutlets, or butterfly larger breasts for faster, more even baking.
    • Don't worry about the sauce: The sauce may look slightly separated or thinner right out of the oven, but it will thicken as it cools. If needed, gently stir the sauce around the chicken with a spoon to bring it back together.
    • Brown the top for extra flavor: For a golden bubbly finish, sprinkle a little extra cheese over the top after removing the foil, then broil for a few minutes at the end.

    Storage Directions

Storage: Store leftover sour cream chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or covered in a 325ยฐF oven until warmed through, adding a splash of broth if needed to loosen the sauce.

Make Ahead: Assemble the dish up to 24 hours in advance, cover, and refrigerate until ready to bake, adding a few extra minutes if baking cold.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Comfort food classics: Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, rice, crusty bread or cream cheese biscuits to soak up the creamy sauce.
    • Fresh veggie pairings: Pair with roasted vegetables, roasted broccoli, green beans, asparagus, or a crisp garden salad for balance.
    • Complete meal ideas: Turn it into a full dinner by serving with sautรฉed mushrooms, cauliflower mash, or air fryer baby potatoes.

    Sour Cream Chicken Recipe FAQs

Can I freeze sour cream chicken?

Freezing is not recommended, as the sour cream sauce can separate and become grainy after thawing.

Will sour cream curdle in the oven when making this sour cream chicken recipe?

Not usually when baked properly. Using full-fat sour cream and baking at a moderate temperature helps keep the sauce creamy and smooth rather than separating.

Why is my sour cream chicken sauce watery?

This usually happens if the chicken releases extra moisture while baking or if low-fat sour cream is used. Thinner chicken pieces and full-fat sour cream help prevent excess liquid.
