Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's simple to prepare: This is a very simple old-fashioned chocolate cobbler. It's quick to mix up and bake, so you can enjoy a rich homemade dessert.
- It's made for chocolate lovers: Have you ever had chocolate casserole? That is basically what this cobbler is! It's layered with moist chocolate cake and a gooey chocolate sauce for anyone who is looking for something extra decadent.
- It's easy to customize: I love that you can tweak this recipe for chocolate cobbler to fit your preferences. Whether that means adding chocolate chips or switching up the extract, you can make something new yet still scrumptious.
Ingredients

- Flour: I use all-purpose flour, but you can use a gluten-free blend or cake flour if you like.
- Brown sugar: I like the complex flavor of brown sugar and how it gives the cake layer a lovely texture, too.
- Cocoa powder: This gives the cobbler and the sauce its rich and chocolatey flavor. I prefer Dutch-process cocoa for the best balance.
- Vanilla extract: This is one of the most important ingredients because it enhances the chocolate flavor of the cocoa powder.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Black Forest. Fold dried cherries into the cake batter, and if you like, you may add a couple of splashes of cherry juice to the sauce component.
- Peanut butter. Swirl creamy peanut butter into the cake batter for richness and a salty flavor.
- Orange. Try orange extract instead of vanilla and add some orange zest for a chocolate orange version.
How to Make Chocolate Cobbler
Below are the steps you'll need to make this easy chocolate cobbler recipe. Preheat your oven to 350°F before you begin.

Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. Add all the dry ingredients to a large mixing bowl and whisk until they are well combined.

Step 2: Whisk the wet ingredients. Mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl until smooth.

Step 3: Combine the mixtures. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir until the batter is smooth.

Step 4: Transfer to the baking dish. Carefully pour the batter into the baking dish.

Step 5: Prepare the sauce. Combine the boiling water with brown sugar and cocoa powder in a glass measuring cup.

Step 6: Pour it over the cake batter. Gently pour it evenly over the cake batter.

Step 7: Bake it. Pop the baking dish into the oven and bake the cobbler for 25-30 minutes or until the cake layer has risen through the chocolate sauce mixture.

Step 8: Cool and serve. Allow it to cool slightly for a few minutes and then enjoy it with scoops of vanilla ice cream or some M&M ice cream.
Recipe Tips
- Grease the pan well: Spray the pan generously with nonstick cooking spray to ensure the cake doesn't stick to the sides when serving it.
- Don't stir it: Once you pour the sauce mixture over the cake batter, leave it alone! You must resist the urge to stir it so it bakes correctly.
- A little jiggling is fine: You don't want the cobbler to be firm when it comes out of the oven. It should be slightly jiggly in the center because of the chocolate sauce.

Storage Directions

Serving Suggestions
- Add a fun crunchy topping like some S'mores snack mix or crushed butter toffee pretzels for texture.
- An easy meal like beef with garlic sauce would be great to serve for guests before bringing out this freshly baked chocolate fudge cobbler.

Recipe FAQs
You can, but it will be slightly different. It won't have the same texture as the classic "self-saucing" cobbler that I make from scratch.
Sure! Use ramekins and reduce the baking time to about 15-20 minutes!
If you overbake it, it has the risk of becoming dry. This can also happen if you use too much flour or don't mix the ingredients enough.
