Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°c.
Add the all purpose flour, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt to a large mixing bowl. Whisk until well combined.
Add the milk, melted butter, egg and vanilla extract to another large mixing bowl. Whisk until well combined.
Pour the combined wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Whisk until just smooth and combined. Spoon the batter into a medium sized, approximately 1.5 quart baking dish and smooth the surface.
To make the sauce, whisk together the boiling water, brown sugar and cocoa powder in a heatproof jug or bowl. Pour the sauce mixture gently over the cake batter.
Bake the cobbler for 25-30 minutes, or until the cake has risen through the sauce mixture and has set.
Serve while warm.
- Store extra chocolate cobbler in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge.
- Don’t stir the cobbler once you pour the sauce mixture on top. Leave it as is so it bakes properly.
- Grease the baking dish well to ensure the top layer doesn’t stick to the sides of it.
