The classic BLT is one that almost everyone loves. It's been a staple in homes for decades and for good reason. It's delicious. But what to serve with BLT sandwiches? That's the question, and today, we have the answer!
What is a BLT?
The BLT sandwich is one of the most common sandwiches that can be customized to your very own specialty. From fresh lettuce to sweet tomatoes and salty cheese. two slices of bread we're meant for this.
The bread mostly served is a bagel, but can easily be substituted for multigrain or white sliced bread. One thing is for sure, it's always toasted, buttery, and crunchy.
What Goes on a BLT?
The option of what types of lettuces can range from romaine, which is very crispy, leafy, and has a mild flavor to it. Iceberg is crispy and generally commonly used. A top healthy choice would be spinach, packed with vitamins.
Cheese isn't a make-or-break but a great addition to the trio. It ranges from mozzarella which adds a mild taste to cheddar, the original standard, and pepper jack if you want that extra kick of heat.
Traditional sliced bacon always works well in this marriage. Turkey bacon is a great choice for a health-wise option, without losing the smokey flavor. Pancetta is a great substitute to add surprising depth.
Tomatoes bring acidity, which can be potent or very mild, depending the tomato used. Tomatoes from off the vine are regularly used and are generally sweet. Beefsteak offers fewer seeds with a bigger size and less juice.
Seasoning the tomatoes with salt and pepper is a good way to cut the tart taste. Lemon can be used to keep your vegetables looking and tasting fresh.
What Goes with BLTs?
The best pairing options include fries, pita chips, and salad. The choices are honestly endless. My family's personal favorite is the old-fashioned cream of broccoli soup.
How healthy are BLTs?
BLTS aren't exactly health food, but they're not totally terrible for you, either. They're somewhere in the middle. Of course, bacon is fatty and salty, but and the other ingredients in the sandwich do offer some health benefits.
The lettuce of a BLT sandwich offers great fiber, calcium, potassium, and vitamin C. The bread, cheese, and bacon all contain protein and can be low in fat - even the bacon if you opt for turkey bacon.
