    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • It's customizable: You can switch the flavors used for these Oreo snowmen and make them completely your own.
    • It's a no-bake treat: I love that I don't need to bake anything to make these adorable treats. Leave the oven off this time and make snowman Oreos instead!
    • It's a crowd-pleaser: Everyone will fall in love with these sweet Oreo balls. They have a lovely festive flavor and presentation.

    Ingredients

All the components for these Oreo snowman cookie balls are listed below. Many of the ingredients are kept in the baking aisle at most grocery stores!

Ingredients to make these Oreo balls in bowls on a table.
    • Oreos: Just regular Oreo cookies are great here. I find that if I use Double Stuf, the extra filling messes with the consistency of the Oreo balls.
    • Cream cheese: This acts like the glue to hold everything together, while adding a tangy flavor to balance the sweetness. Allow it to soften before you make this recipe.
    • Extracts: I use both vanilla and peppermint extract in the cream cheese Oreo mixture. The peppermint adds festive flavor while the vanilla is meant to enhance the flavors of the other ingredients.
    • White chocolate: I like to use melting candy wafers for this because I find them easier to work with. However, you may use white chocolate chips in a pinch.
    • Shortening: This helps the chocolate become silky smooth and super easy to dip the Oreo balls in. Coconut or vegetable oil works, too.
    • Decorating gel: The orange and black gel frosting helps create the snowman's face.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Golden Oreos: Use golden Oreos instead of original for a stronger vanilla flavor.
    • Marshmallow hot cocoa: Add some hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows for a cozy version.
    • Peppermint mocha: Stir in a small scoop of espresso powder to create a peppermint mocha flavor.

How to Make Snowman Oreo Balls

Below are the steps needed to prepare these Oreo Christmas balls! Prepare a sheet tray or two with parchment paper before you get started.

Cream cheese, crushed Oreos, and extracts in a large bowl.

Step 1: Prepare the mixture. Combine the cream cheese, crushed Oreos, and extracts in a large bowl.

Cream cheese, crushed Oreos, and extracts combined with a mixer.

Step 2: Combine. Using an electric mixer, beat the ingredients until they are well combined and take on a dough-like consistency.

Mixture scooped onto a parchment paper.

Step 3: Form the balls. Next, take a 2-tablespoon scoop and form the Oreo balls. Gently roll them with your hands and place them down on the prepared tray, with a little bit of space between each one. Pop it in the fridge for about 2 hours.

A bowl with melted white chocolate in it.

Step 4: Melt the chocolate. When the cookie balls are just about ready, add the white chocolate to a bowl and heat at 50% power in the microwave for 1 minute, and then add the shortening. Place it back in the microwave for 30-second intervals until it's smooth.

Step 5: Dip the balls. Carefully dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate, and then place it back on the sheet tray.

Mini Oreo on top for a hat.

Step 6: Add decorations. Add the mini Oreo on top for a hat, and pop the balls in the fridge for another 30 minutes. Then, you can finish them by using the icing for the face, and then they're ready to enjoy.

    Recipe Tips

    • Dip the balls gently: Be careful when you dip the Oreo balls so you can get a thin, smooth coating.
    • Decorate them quickly: Add the hats to your Oreo snowman cookie balls quickly before the chocolate sets.
    • Crush the Oreos finely: Ensure that you finely crush the Oreos. Larger chunks make it more difficult to form the balls.

I highly recommend Oreo mint balls if you're looking for more Christmas Oreo balls.

    Storage Directions

    • Storing: Keep them in an airtight container for up to 1 week in the refrigerator or 3 months in the freezer. Allow them to thaw overnight in the fridge before serving them.
    • Make Ahead: Since these Oreo balls take some chill time, you can make these the day before you plan to serve them, especially if it's for a special occasion like a potluck!

    Serving Suggestions

    • Use these snowman Oreo balls as a fun decoration for other desserts like chocolate mint cupcakes or eggnog cheesecake.
    • Add them to your appetizer spread. Savory snacks like cheese bacon dip, and crockpot rotel dip are great accompaniments.
    • Enjoy them as a standalone dessert after a delicious holiday meal of air fryer ham with pineapple glaze.

    Recipe FAQs

Why is the Oreo mixture so soft?

This happens if the cream cheese gets too warm or if the Oreo balls haven't chilled long enough. Leave them to chill for a minimum of 2 hours, so they are easier to handle.

    Why is the chocolate cracking?

If the coating of chocolate is too thick or if the temperature changes too fast, it can cause the chocolate to crack. Chill them in the fridge and not the freezer for the best result.

    Why is the chocolate seizing?

If you heat the chocolate at too high a temperature, it can seize. This also happens when it cools too quickly. Follow the directions in the recipe to ensure that it melts perfectly!

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract

    • Orange and black decoration/writing gel
    InstacartGet Recipe Ingredients

    Instructions

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine oreos, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and peppermint. Mix with an eclectic hand or stand mixer for 1-2 minutes until fully combined and one dough-like mixture is formed.
    • Using a 2 tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop dough from the bowl and form into an even, smooth, round ball using the palms of your hands. Place each ball on a large cookie (I use 11x17 inch) sheet prepared with parchment paper.
    • Place the cookie sheet inside the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours.
    • Near the end of the chill time, begin to prepare the melting wafers. Place the wafers in a microwave safe bowl and heat on 50% power or on defrost mode for 1 minute. Stir with a fork and add the crisco or oil. Return to the microwave for additional 30 seconds bursts, stirring in between, until smooth and silky.
    • Working one at a time, dip the oreo balls inside the chocolate using two forks or dipping tools, coating it completely before adding it back on the cookie sheet. Be sure to scrape the bottoms of your forks or dipping tools to remove any excess chocolate. You can also gently sling the ball from side to side to remove any excess. Immediately add a mini oreo to the top of each snowman, slightly hanging off the side. Repeat for each snowman before placing the sheet back into the refrigerator to chill for 30 minutes.
    • When chill time is complete, use the black writing gel to draw two eyes and a smile on each snowman. Use the orange writing gel to draw a carrot nose (sideways triangle). Repeat for each one. Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.

    Notes

    • If the temperature of the chocolate changes too fast or if the coating on the Oreo balls is too thick, it can cause the chocolate to crack.
    • Use a food processor to crush the Oreos as finely as possible because large pieces will keep the balls from being round and smooth.
    • Add the mini Oreos to your snowman heads quickly so they stick before the chocolate begins to set.
