Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries are so underrated! As long as they are seasoned and cooked properly, they are truly impressive and so yummy. This is one of my favorite recipes because it's simple, but it doesn't sacrifice flavor with the combination of spices.

I find that I prefer crispy sweet potato fries in the oven over regular potato fries. Call me crazy, but the natural sweetness of the potatoes with the savory and spicy seasonings is the perfect bite. Plus, you really can dip these fries in anything; you aren't limited to simple ketchup or honey mustard!

If you love crispy fries, you should try air fryer steak fries and funnel cake fries.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • It's better than frozen: Sometimes, frozen fries work great when you're short on time. I just love using fresh ones whenever I can. They have a softer texture in the middle and even more sweetness.
    • It's budget-friendly: I love how cheap the ingredients are! All you really need are the sweet potatoes, some oil, and spices.
    • It's customizable: This recipe is so easy to make your own! Have fun with the seasonings and get creative with the flavor profile.

    Ingredients

All you need to make these crispy oven sweet potato fries are the potatoes, a little oil, and some spices. It's really that simple!

Ingredients to make these fries on a table.
    • Sweet potatoes: You'll need four medium sweet potatoes. If you end up with large ones, two or sometimes three will work. Scrub them well when you wash them because you'll be leaving the skin on.
    • Spices: I use a variety of spices, including garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and chili powder. A great substitute is to use jalapeno powder instead of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Garlic parmesan: Toss the hot and crispy baked sweet potato fries in melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, and grated parmesan cheese.
    • Cinnamon sugar: Go extra sweet and toss them in a blend of cinnamon and sugar.
    • Add fresh herbs: Bake them with some chopped fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme!

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries in the Oven

Here are the directions on how to make crispy sweet potato fries in the oven. Make sure you preheat your oven to 425 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Sweet potatoes cut up on a cutting board.

Step 1: Cut the potatoes and parsley. First, cut the ends off the sweet potatoes, then slice them into ½-inch sticks.

Step 2: Add the potatoes, spices, and oil to the pan. Now you can place them on the prepared sheet pan, drizzle the oil, and sprinkle the spices on top.

Oil and seasoning added to the sweet potatoes.

Step 3: Coat the fries. Next, toss the fries in the oil and seasoning until they are evenly coated, and then arrange them in a single layer.

Step 4: Bake and garnish. Pop the pan into the oven and bake the sweet potato fries for about 15 minutes. Lightly toss them around and cook them for another 10-15 minutes or until they are golden and crispy. Serve with sweet potato fries sauce, or spicy harissa aioli for heat!

    Recipe Tips

    • Peel the sweet potatoes: If you don't enjoy the texture of the sweet potato skin, feel free to peel the potatoes.
    • Use more than one pan if needed: Ensure that the fries don't overlap much so they all have a chance to get nice and crispy.
    • Cut the potatoes evenly: When cutting the sweet potatoes into sticks, make sure all of the pieces are similar in size so they cook evenly.

These air fryer frozen sweet potato fries are a shortcut to delicious sweet potato fries that you should try, too.

    Storage Directions

    • Storing: Place leftover oven-fried sweet potato fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze the fries in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.
    • Reheating: These are best reheated in a 400-degree air fryer for 5-7 minutes or a 400-degree oven for bout 10 minutes. Avoid the microwave, or your sweet potatoes will be mushy.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Fries and burgers are the best combo! Enjoy the best juicy bourbon burger or smash burger tacos with your oven-baked sweet potato fries.
    • Chicken is also great, and you should try Burger King chicken fries and air fryer chicken tenders (no breading) as the main course.
    • If you want a sweet dipping sauce, I highly recommend this healthy honey mustard dip.

    Recipe FAQs

Why are my sweet potato fries soggy?

If your oven isn't hot enough or if the potatoes are crowded on the sheet pan, these things can prevent them from getting crispy. Also, serve them while they are freshly baked because once they start to get cold, they get soft.

Why is the outside of the fries burning?

If the ends of your sweet potato fries are super thin, this can make the ends start to burn while the rest of the potato remains undercooked. Cut them into even sticks as best as you can!

Can I use white potatoes instead?

Of course! I love sweet potatoes for this recipe, but a white variety such as Russet or Yukon Gold works.
