I love Halloween, and these Oreo Spiders are one of my favorite edible Halloween crafts. You take an Oreo Cakester and decorate it using colored icing and different candies to make it look like an adorable little spider. It's incredibly simple but fun and yummy.

Making spider Oreos is a great way to let your creative side shine. It's a great activity to do with your kids or even as an adult. I love to prepare them for small Halloween gatherings or even fall bake sales. They are both cute AND clever.

More recipes for Oreo lovers include Oreo Rice Krispie treats and Oreo pancakes.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • It's great to do with kids: These spider snacks are the perfect edible treat for Halloween. They are easy with minimal steps, making it extra fun to prepare with your little ones.
    • There is no baking: I love this recipe requires no cooking or baking of any kind. Simply decorate the Oreo Cakesters as they are with edible decorations!
    • It can be made quickly: It only takes a few minutes to make these on my own, so I have no issues making them the day of a party or gathering, as they only need a few minutes to set before you serve them.

    Ingredients

Important ingredients you need to make these Oreo spiders are listed below. It's easier than ever to make these adorable spider treats!

Ingredients to make Oreo spiders on a table.
    • Oreo Cakesters: These Oreo Cakesters make the perfect spider sandwich! They come in original, but I've also seen golden and peanut butter cream versions as well. I prefer any flavor with the dark cookie to make the spider look more real.
    • Decorations: For these, I use white candy melts to attach the eyes and create fangs, red icing for the mouth, and black icing to hold the licorice legs in place. All of these can be found in the baking or seasonal aisle at your grocery store during the fall.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

How to Make Halloween Oreo Spiders

Here are the steps you'll need to decorate your adorable little Oreo spiders. It's very straightforward!

Licorice cut and placed into the cream of a Cakester.

Step 1: Add the legs. Cut the black licorice into 1.5-to 2-inch pieces and stick 4 pieces into each side of the Cakester, right into the cream in the middle.

White candy melts attaching two candy eyes on the top front of Cakesters.

Step 2: Attach the eyes. Use a little of the white candy melts to attach two candy eyes on the top front of each Cakester.

Piped triangles onto a piece of parchment for fangs.

Step 3: Make the fangs. Then, pipe small triangles onto a piece of parchment (2 for each Oreo spider) and let them harden.

Red icing added to the front of a Oreo Cakester.

Step 4: Add red icing. Add a line of red icing to the front of the Oreo Cakester.

    Fangs attached to red gel.

Step 5: Attach the fangs. Use the red gel to attach the fangs.

Black icing added around white cream to keep spider legs stable.

Step 6: Add black icing. Pipe black icing around the white cream to keep the legs stable, and you're done!

    Recipe Tips

    • Try peanut butter: If you like, you can use peanut butter to stick the candy eyes onto the Oreo Cakesters instead of candy melts.
    • Make pretzel rod legs: Break pretzel rods into thirds (not the small sticks) and use those as legs if you don't like black licorice.
    • Storage directions: You may store these at room temperature for about a day or so, or in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

If you love spiders, try these spider donuts this Halloween, too!

    Serving Suggestions

    • You can't go wrong with a cake-cookie and ice cream! Try this homemade Kit Kat ice cream or creamsicle ice cream, so the orange color matches the theme.
    • Another spooky snack to enjoy with these spiders is mummy pizzas, Ghost Cupcakes or this halloween chex mix recipe!
    • You can even serve this pumpkin chili to a crowd if you want!

    Recipe FAQs

Why are the decorations falling off?

If the Oreo spiders aren't given enough time to set, the eyes or legs may fall off. It should only take a few minutes, but you may place them in the fridge to speed up the process.

    Can I make them ahead?

I don't recommend this, as it's so easy to make them on demand. Maybe a couple of hours in advance, but I wouldn't make them multiple days early!

    Ingredients

    • 2 Oreo Cakesters

    • Black writing icing
    • Red gel icing

    Instructions

    • Place the melted white coating candy into a piping bag fitted with a small open tip.
    • Cut the black licorice into eight pieces roughly 1.5"-2" long, these will be the legs.
    • Stick 4 of the legs into the cream on each side of the Cakester.
    • Pipe two small dots of the melted coating candy on the top front of the Cakester where you'll place the eyes. Stick one eye on each dot.
    • Pipe small triangles, to use as fangs, onto parchment paper with the melted candy coating.
    • Once the fangs have hardened, pipe a line of red writing gel along the front cream of the Cakester - where the teeth will go (see picture). Attach teeth to the gel, then pipe a second line on top of the teeth.
    • Use the black writing Icing to pipe a line along where the legs meet the body (this helps to hide the white cream as well as keep the legs stable after it dries)
    • Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Keep your Oreo spiders covered on the counter for a couple of hours or in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2-3 days.
    • Allow the candy melts plenty of time to set and harden, so decorations don't start to fall off.
    • Switch it up and use pretzel logs instead of black licorice for the legs!
