There's something magical about the way these king's hawaiian cinnamon rolls come together with such simple ingredients. Whether you're serving them for brunch, dessert, or a sweet snack, they always disappear fast. The aroma alone will have everyone gathering in the kitchen before they're even done. If you drizzle icing on top or serve it on the side, every bite is soft and indulgent. It's comfort food at its easiest.

This was inspired by my canned cinnamon rolls with heavy cream and pie crust cinnamon rolls on this site, and pairs well with keto bacon egg cups and Mexican breakfast casserole.

Bottom half of King's Hawaiian Cinnamon Rolls in baking dish covered in cinnamon mixture.

Step 1: Making Cinnamon Rolls. Slice your Hawaiian rolls in half, as evenly as possible. Place the bottom half in the baking dish and set aside.

In a small bowl, stir together the butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until homogenous. Spread ¾ of the mixture over the bottom sheet of rolls. Place the top halves on top of the filling. Top your buns with the remaining filling.

Top added and baked in casserole dish.

Step 2: Bake and Make Icing. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden and crispy.

While your rolls bake, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth and homogenous.

Allow rolls to cool for 10 minutes.

    • Use soft butter: Makes spreading easier if very soft.
    • Slice evenly: Be careful when slicing your rolls in half to keep the two halves as even as possible.
    • Don't overbake: Prevents dryness and bake until tops are golden and crisp.
    • Use sweet rolls: Adds extra flavor.
    • Spread filling evenly: Ensures every bite is flavorful.
    • Serve warm: Most enjoyment.
    • Adjust icing thickness: Add milk gradually, 1 tablespoon at a time, until reach desired consistency.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I keep them soft after baking?

Store them in an airtight container and reheat before serving.

Why are my Hawaiian roll cinnamon rolls dry?

They may have been overbaked or didn't have enough butter or filling.

Do I need to separate the rolls before assembling?

No, keep them connected and slice the entire sheet in half for easier layering.

Can I use regular dinner rolls instead of Hawaiian rolls?

Yes, but Hawaiian rolls or any sweet rolls add a sweeter flavor that works best for cinnamon rolls.
