After a little sear, the meat simmers for hours in the crock pot so you can go about your day.  The end result is melt-in-your-mouth steak meat ready to be eaten on its own, with rice, potatoes, or some veggies.

Steak bites served on mashed potatoes, garnished with fresh herbs, with a fork lifting a piece of meat.

Tender chunks of top sirloin simmer for hours with a blend of savory au jus mix, Worcestershire sauce, creamy butter, and beef stock for a satisfying dish the whole family will love. Perfect for those crazy weeknights or lazy weekends.

Feel free to change things up based on what you’ve got on hand and your taste preferences.

Why You Will Love This Crock Pot Steak Bites Recipe

    • Tender Steak: The slow cooking process in this easy weeknight meal ensures that the top sirloin steak becomes incredibly tender.
    • Convenience: With minimal hands-on time, this crockpot steak bites meal allows you to set it and forget it, making it perfect for any night of the week or when you want a stress-free dinner for the whole family.
    • Versatility: Serve the succulent steak cubes and gravy over mashed potatoes for a classic comfort meal, or get creative by pairing it with rice, noodles, or even in a sandwich for a delicious twist.
    • Family-Friendly: Loved by both adults and kids alike, this slow cooker steak bites dish is a crowd-pleaser that's sure to become a family favorite and staple in your recipe rotation.

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make steak bites on a marble surface, including cubed beef, butter, flour, soy sauce, honey, garlic, red onion, and spices.
    • Top Sirloin Steak: A lean cut of beef that's ideal for slow cooking because it becomes tender and juicy over a long cooking time. You can also use chuck roast, flat iron steak, round steak, or beef stew meat if that's what you prefer.
    • Au Jus Gravy Mix: Adds depth of flavor and richness to the gravy, but it tends to be super salty. I recommend adding it to taste. If you don't have au jus gravy mix, you can use beef bouillon cubes, beef gravy mix, or beef stock concentrate. Ranch seasoning and onion soup mix can be added as well to this easy recipe for more flavor.
    • Butter: Enhances the richness and silkiness of the gravy, adding a luxurious touch to this crockpot steak bites recipe. You can use margarine or plant-based butter.
    • Beef Broth: Provides a savory base for the gravy, infusing the steak cubes with beefy flavor as they cook. You can use unsalted beef stock, vegetable broth, or even cream of mushroom soup if that's what you prefer.
    • Garlic: Adds aromatic flavor to the dish, complementing the savory notes of the beef and gravy. You can use garlic powder or dried minced garlic as a substitute, but be sure to adjust the quantity to taste.
    • Onions: Bring sweetness and depth of flavor, balancing out the richness of the gravy. I sometimes like to use shallots, green onions, or leeks for a different onion flavor.
    • Worcestershire Sauce: Adds depth and a hint of tanginess to the gravy. You can use soy sauce sparingly or tamari as a gluten-free alternative.
    • Olive Oil: Used for browning the steak cubes, adding flavor, and helping to develop a golden-brown crust. You can use vegetable oil, avocado oil, or canola oil instead.

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

    Variations

    • Change up the meat: Use a different cut of meat, diced chicken, turkey, or pork.
    • Add some vegetables: Slowly simmered vegetables, like diced carrots, baby potatoes, celery, or mushrooms, add flavor and create a more stew-like dish.
    • Make the steak Asian-inspired: Substitute the Worcestershire for soy sauce, and add some grated ginger and honey for more of an Asian flare.
    • Stir in some cooking wine: Add cooking sherry or red wine for a deeper, richer flavor of meat.
    • Add some fresh herbs. Fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary can also be added for a fragrant and flavorful twist.

How to Make Steak Bites in the Slow Cooker

    Storage

    • Leftovers: Transfer the cooled tender steak tips and gravy to an airtight container or freezer bag and refrigerate them for up to 3-4 days.
For longer storage, you can freeze this delicious recipe for up to 2-3 months. Thaw them out in the fridge before reheating.
    • Reheat: Gently warm the steak cubes and gravy in a saucepan over low heat until they are heated through. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Alternatively, you can reheat individual portions in the microwave by placing them in a small bowl and covering them with a damp paper towel to prevent splatter.

    Serving Suggestions

This recipe for steak cubes goes well with loads of side dishes. I especially love the juicy steak bites and gravy over mashed potatoes or egg noodles with a side of steamed asparagus, green beans, or a fresh green salad.

    Recipe Tips

    • Thicken the Gravy: If you want a thicker gravy, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with two tablespoons of cold water until it is smooth. Add it gradually to the crockpot during the last hour of cooking. Simmer the gravy until it reaches your preferred thickness.
    • Preheat the Skillet: Make sure the skillet is hot before adding the steak cubes to achieve a good sear and caramelization.
    • Brown in Batches: Don't overcrowd the skillet. This will ensure even browning of the steak cubes.
    • Trim Excess Fat: Removing excess fat from the steak cubes helps keep the gravy from becoming greasy.
    • Combine Ingredients in Crockpot: Combine the ingredients and liquids to ensure even distribution of flavor.
    • Don't Overcook: Keep an eye on the steak cubes to prevent them from turning into overly tender meat.

Do you have questions about (insert recipe name or related keyword here)? Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about (insert recipe name or keyword here)

Can I cook this recipe on the stove instead of a crockpot?

Yes, you can simmer the ingredients in a large pot or Dutch oven on the stove over low heat for 2-3 hours until the steak is tender.

Can I skip browning the steak cubes?

While browning adds flavor, you can skip this step if you're short on time. Skipping the browning step could affect the overall flavor and texture of the dish.
