This cowboy pasta salad is a fun twist on classic pasta salad with bold, smoky ingredients that bring everything together. The combination of sausage, bacon, and BBQ dressing makes it rich and satisfying, while fresh vegetables add balance and texture. It's easy to customize and even better after chilling, making it ideal for meal prep or entertaining.

This was inspired by my easy cowboy stew and cowboy soup on this site, and pairs well with this cowboy burger and cowboy crack dip.

    Recipe FAQs

What type of pasta works best for cowboy pasta salad?

Short pasta shapes like bow tie (farfalle), rotini, or penne work best because they hold onto the dressing and mix-ins easily. These shapes also make the salad easier to serve and ensure every bite has a good balance of ingredients.

Can I use a different dressing for cowboy pasta salad?

While the BBQ mayo dressing is what gives cowboy pasta salad its signature flavor, you can customize it by using ranch dressing, a vinaigrette, or even a spicy chipotle dressing. Each variation will slightly change the flavor profile but still work well.

Is cowboy pasta salad served hot or cold?

Cowboy pasta salad is best served cold or slightly chilled. Chilling helps the flavors develop and gives the salad its signature creamy texture, making it refreshing and perfect for warm weather meals.

How do I keep cowboy pasta salad from drying out?

To prevent the salad from drying out, make sure the pasta is fully cooled before mixing and store it in an airtight container. If it thickens in the fridge, simply stir in a small amount of extra dressing before serving to refresh it.
