These mummy pigs in a blanket have googly eyes, which makes them the most adorable Halloween hot dogs ever in addition to being absolutely delicious with their wrappings of crescent roll dough. Serve it up with bloodshot eye dip and you've got a spook-tacular appetizer everyone loves!
Who here loves Halloween? If you answered "yes", then we can be friends. I've loved Halloween since I was a kid. I mean, come on, it's an entire holiday devoted to candy!
I remember dressing up as a kid and hitting all the houses trick or treating in the neighborhood, hoping against hope that I'd find that one neighbor who always popped for the full-size candy bars and not that fun-size BS. LOL
As I got older, I never lost my love for Halloween and Halloween goodies. The definition of goodies just changed for me. Oh, I still had - and have - a sweet tooth to be sure, but as I got older and began to throw Halloween parties, I realized that humans cannot live on candy alone.
I still made sweet treats and had bowls of candy on hand for our parties, but I also began to make savory dishes for my Halloween dinner parties, as well.
When I had my son and he was old enough to have made friends at school, I started making kid-friendly treats for my parties, as well. One year, I made mummy dogs, and they were such a hit, that they became an instant staple at all of my Halloween to-dos.
Over the years, that recipe has changed. I've tried different dough and hot dog variations. I've even tried different ways of making my Halloween hot dogs look more "mummy-ish". I think I've finally perfected the recipe, and I'm so happy to share it with all of you.
History of Pigs in a Blanket
This mummy hot dogs recipe is just a variation on pigs in a blanket, one of the most iconic appetizers of all time. Thanks to this delicious hot dog treat, we have all sorts of tasty hot dog appetizer variations today.
Because the humble hot dog wrapped in dough has become so iconic, I want to take a second to discuss the history of this tasty treat before we move on.
No one knows for sure exactly when hot dogs wrapped in a dough were first invented, but they're believed to have originated in either Czechoslovakia or Germany.
However, their first appearance in print can be found in the Cooking for Kids cookbook, which was published by Betty Crocker in 1957. Pigs in a blanket are popular the world over.
They're called many things and served in slightly different ways, but they all have one thing in common - they're hot dogs wrapped in some sort of dough or batter.
Pigs in a blanket are also called Wesley Dogs in the USA. In Germany, they're called wurstchen I'm schlafrock, or sausage in a dressing gown, and wrapped in a pancake. In Israle, they're called moshe ba'teiva, or Moses in the ark, and in Scotland, they're called, appropriately enough, kilted sausages.
Whatever you call them, pigs in a blanket are absolutely delicious, and this mummy hot dogs recipe takes that great flavor and makes it super fun for the Halloween holiday.

Ingredients
It only takes a few ingredients to make this tasty mummy hot dogs recipe in your air fryer or oven. This is one of those easy recipes that kids LOVE. The entire thing is basically a hot dog wrapped in dough, so there's not a lot going on here.
This is a recipe that is definitely an example of something being greater than the sum of its parts. Here's what you'll need.
- Hotdogs - use your favorite brand
- Crescent roll dough - I used Pillsbury sheets, but any brand is fine and if you can’t find the sheets, just use the regular roll and pinch the seams together.
- Eyes - you can find little candy eyes in the sprinkle, frosting section or order from Amazon.
- Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickle relish, a slice of cheese to make the dip.
See? There's not much to this recipe at all. You'll probably already have all of the ingredients in your kitchen already. The only thing you might have to get especially for this recipe is the crescent roll dough.
Outside of that, I feel like most people already have all of these ingredients floating around their kitchen right this second.
Making the Mummy Hot Dogs Recipe
Making these Halloween hot dogs is even easier than shopping for the ingredients. The most labor-intensive part of the recipe is wrapping the dogs in the dough and making the sauce, and both of those things are exceedingly easy.
It really is one of the most straightforward recipes you'll ever make.
For the Mummy Hot Dogs
- Unroll the crescent sheet or dough on to a large cutting mat. If you used regular crescent dough please press to remove seams.
- Cut ¼ inch slices down the long side of the dough using a knife or pizza cutter.
- Starting at one end, wrap a strip or pieces of dough randomly around the hot dog. You may wish to use 2 strips per hot dog. Leave a gap for the eyes.
- Place the crescent-wrapped hot dogs into your prepared air fryer basket or baking sheets covered in parchment paper or cooking spray.
Air Fryer Mummy Hot Dogs
- Preheat air fryer to 330 degrees for 5 minutes.
- Prepare air fryer basket with cooking spray.
- Place mummy dogs inside air fryer basket.
- Set timer for 5 to 6 minutes.
- Carefully remove mummy dogs from air fryer basket.
- Put a dot of mustard for each eye, then place a candy eye on the mustard. This will help “glue” the eyes on. You don’t need much.
- Serve immediately with your choice of dip.
Oven Halloween Hot Dogs
- Preheat the oven to 375° and spray a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray or parchment paper.
- Place prepared hot dog mummies on the baking pan and place them in the oven.
- Bake for 10 minutes and check if the dough has cooked. Add another minute or two of baking time if the dough isn’t quite baked through or until the dough is golden brown.
- Remove the mummies from the cookie sheet and place them on a serving plate.
- Put a dot of mustard for each eye, then place a candy eye on the mustard. This will help “glue” the eyes on. You don’t need much. Serve with your choice of dips.
For the Dips
There are four dips here. I like to make one of each and let everyone pick which one they want to use. They're all tasty and so Halloween.
- Spider Web: Fill a small bowl with ketchup. Make three circles around the bowl, each one smaller than the last. Space each circle out evenly from the other. Put a large dot of mustard in the middle. Using a toothpick, start from the middle and pull straight out past the last circle to create a line of mustard connecting to each circle. Go to the opposite side of the bowl and pull out from that side. You can do this 5 to 7 times. This will create a web.
- Monster puddle or vomit: Go around the outer edge of the bowl in a circular manner and make a “cup of ketchup”. Fill the inside of the “cup” with green relish. Place eyes around the puddle.
- Ghosts or Bats: Use a mini ghost cookie cutter or a sharp knife and cut out a ghost shape on a piece of cheese. You can cut out eyes for more of an effect. Make a few and place in a bowl of ketchup. You can also cut out bats if you want.
- Bloodshot eye: Spoon mayonnaise in a bowl and use a spoon to create a “hole” in the middle. Fill the hole with ketchup. Using a toothpick, starting in the ketchup, pull outwards in a squiggle line, dragging some ketchup out to create a bloodshot effect. Repeat around the ketchup. Add a little circle of mustard to finish out the eye.
That's all there is to it! See? These scourges of the undead realm couldn't be easier to make.
Variations
Not only is this mummy hot dogs recipe simple and delicious, but it's also open to interpretation. It's one of those recipes that you can play around with to make it more your own just by making small changes. Here are some great ideas to switch things up.
- You can roll up a piece of cheese under the crescent dough for some added yumminess.
- You can also make mini mummies. Either cut the hotdogs in half or use mini sausages.
- Substitute summer sausage or cooked Italian sausage for the hot dogs.
Storing Air Fryer Mummy Hot Dogs
These mummy pigs in a blanket will keep well in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. You can't freeze these so make sure you only make an amount that you can finish within three days.
Reheating Mummy Dogs
To reheat, simply pop them in the oven for about 5 minutes to get them hot and keep the dough from getting soggy. If reheating inside your air fryer cook for 3 miutes on 325 degrees and you're good to go!
