White Chocolate Cake Popcorn is perfect for any occasion or celebration. So versatile, so easy and a cool treat to surprise your friends and family with!
The Best Chocolate Cake Covered Popcorn Recipe
White Chocolate Cake Popcorn is the perfect delicious sweet snack that everyone enjoys preparing and eating too! I used to believe that you had to struggle and sacrifice in order to create and serve something so wonderful. Now I know better!
Most people cover their popcorn with just white chocolate. I prefer to add a little bit of cake mix to create a wonderful cake flavor, while still enjoying every white chocolate covered bite! Definitely the best of both worlds in my opinion!
Not only is this popcorn super tasty and oh so addictive, it looks like you spent much more time preparing it than you did! People are always surprised when I share just how easy White Chocolate Cake Popcorn is to make!
The options are also plentiful (see below for some ideas) and I love having choices. Doesn't everyone? This recipe can be so different every time you make it if you want.
For this post I chose a festive color scheme. Feel free to use any color you desire or any color that suits the holiday or time of year to make this white chocolate cake popcorn!
For example, I usually include M & M's with this treat and luckily M & M's have special colors, depending on the season. So for Christmas I would use green and red, for St. Patrick's Day green, for Valentine's Day red and Independence Day in the United States the red and blue. You get the idea.
Choose your favorite ingredients, not forgetting the pretzels and the salt they bring to this sweet treat (if that is what you are looking for). You have a different tasty result, every time.
With your different, favorite treats and even a few drops of food coloring (or chocolate melts) in the white chocolate, your dessert will have a totally different look to it! Always delicious and there is nothing wrong with being seasonal and fun too!
We ate this popcorn so much at first and we had a blast figuring out our favorite way to make this snack! Now though we eat it once and a while, thank goodness. Like they say "everything in moderation"!
The Best Edible Gift
This White Chocolate Popcorn makes one of the greatest edible gifts! The perfect, reasonably priced or inexpensive, addictive treat is great for neighbors, teachers, friends and family! Easily made by adults and children alike, this is something you can have a ton of fun with.
To make this into an edible gift, all you may need is a cup or container of some kind and/or some cellophane wrap and some ribbon. I have filled a paper cup with popcorn that I purchased at the local dollar store with a seasonal pattern on it.
Next, I placed it on top of a square cut piece of cellophane, lifted and gathered all of the cellophane together and tied it up with ribbon. Add a gift tag on it and there you have it, your edible gift is ready to go!
How do I serve it?
You have a couple options besides preparing the popcorn portioned as an edible gift.
First, you can serve a big bowl of popcorn and have everyone grabbing handfuls out of the bowl. Or you can serve little bowls full of popcorn, ready to eat, and refill them as necessary. I find the second option to be a little more sanitary.
Regardless, everyone is going to devour and be grateful for this amazing sweet treat!

Best White Chocolate Snack Mix with Popcorn
I use plain microwave popcorn, because I love the white colored light and fluffy kernels. Sometimes when you buy buttered popcorn it can have yellow tinge from the butter flavor and the white chocolate doesn't stick as well to it as the plain. Plus, it is easier to color and just looks amazing!
Ultimately though you can use any kind of popcorn but I would avoid pre-popped, store bought bags of buttered popcorn for this recipe. It will work but not as well as the plain, salted popcorn.
There are so many ways to make popcorn and you have many choices! I have taken these from a list of 15 ways to make popcorn that you can find here if you want to know more about it.
Air poppers
Air Poppers have been around since I was young in the 1970's and I remember having one. They use hot air and steam to pop the kernels into edible popcorn.
Microwave Popcorn
Use an unopened store bought bag of microwavable popcorn to make some perfect popped kernels in a few minutes. Be careful when opening the bag though because boy oh boy is the steam hot!
Your other option is to throw about ¼ cup of popcorn kernels into a paper bag, fold the end over a few times and start the microwave. Once popping reduces to almost nothing remove from microwave and open top of bag slowly to avoid burning yourself from the heat!
Old Stove Top Method
The old stove top method will work. Take a large pot, toss in some oil and allow it to heat up over medium high heat. Add your popcorn kernels and stir them with a spoon. Cover the popcorn with a lid.
Once kernels begin to pop you can slightly set the lid to the side and let a little air in.
Shake and adjust the pot periodically, every 45 seconds or so, and leave the lid slightly off.
Once popping slows down remove the pot from the heat and don't totally remove the lid.
Wait until you don't hear anymore popping.
Once popping has stopped remove lid and continue making this recipe.

What can you add into White Chocolate Popcorn
First, remember you can flavor or color the popcorn any way you want to. From chocolate melts, which flavor or color the white chocolate, to food coloring, you can have a blast planning what your popcorn will look and taste like!
Now that you see how easy this sweet treat is to make, you need to have a look at our list of favorite possible additions to pick from. If I am missing anything please let me know in the comments so I can add it in. The longer the list the better.
Feel free to add as much or as little of each as you like but I usually add between ¼ to ½ cup of 2 or 3 different choices. If I am looking for a salty and sweet treat I make sure to add mini salted pretzels with the popcorn.
If I want sweet, I just skip the pretzels and make my choices accordingly.
Also, sometimes I don't add the butter or cake mix at all. I just add the melted white chocolate, all by itself. Just make sure the popcorn and your chosen treats are coated with the white chocolate, add sprinkles and anything else required or desired!

Popcorn Options
- nuts like peanuts, almonds, cashews or coconut
- caramel popcorn
- M&Ms of all kinds
- bite sized pretzels, I find the sticks make eating a challenge at times
- toffee or caramel bits
- extra sea salt
- malt balls
- mini or sliced chocolate candy bars like Snickers, Kit Kat or Oh Henry
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or Reese's Pieces
- mini marshmallows
- sprinkles or sparkles
- Any other candy you desire!
How do you store White Chocolate Popcorn
This popcorn can get soft pretty quick, due to the white chocolate. However, I have found when I put this in an airtight container, it definitely doesn't get soft, as fast. Anything with a working lid will do, just in case this is the one time there are leftovers!
You can easily store this popcorn for up to about 4 or 5 days, in the airtight container and at room temperature. It's so tasty and addictive though, it never lasts that long!
Ingredients in White Chocolate Cake Popcorn
- microwaved bag of popped popcorn (or equivalent)

- white cake mix
- melted white chocolate
- sprinkles of your choice (or more if you want)
- white chocolate pretzels
- M & M's
How to make White Chocolate Cake Popcorn
If you're like me and you hate biting unpopped popcorn kernels then dump your popped popcorn onto a rimmed baking sheet. This way you can remove the kernels and avoid anyone breaking a tooth.
Your other option is a trick I learned years ago I was taught this trick to dump all of your popped popcorn onto a cooling rack or grate and watch the kernels fall right through all of the holes! So much simpler than picking through your popcorn one piece a a time!
In an extra large bowl toss popcorn with melted butter, then sprinkle cake mix all over your popcorn and toss until coated. The butter added here allows the cake mix to stick to the popcorn.
Drizzle the white chocolate, as evenly as possible, all over the popcorn. Toss again until the chocolate totally covers all of the popcorn.
Pour out onto a rimmed sheet pan, spread out, and then add sprinkles, pretzels, and M&M's.
Allow to dry or set on baking sheet on your counter for about 2 hours ( you can start munching after 15 minutes though) This popcorn must be dry or set before you place it in an airtight container.
Serve as desired and enjoy!
