Over the years, we've made all kinds of items that can double as breakfast or an appetizer, but these crescent rolls with sausage and cheese are one of our favorites. They're so simple to make, and they deliver a big kick of flavor in a small package.

This was inspired by our air fryer pigs in a blanket and sausage and cream cheese crescent rolls, and they pair well with other delicious breakfast items like these air fryer pancakes.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

    • Limited Ingredients: You only need three ingredients to make these tasty bites.
    • Easy: This is a quick and easy recipe that's ready in just minutes.
    • Classic Breakfast Flavor: The combination of sausage, cheese, and crescent dough creates a classic breakfast flavor profile.
    • Versatile: These are perfect for breakfast, brunch, parties, or snacking.

    Ingredients

It only takes three simple ingredients to make this recipe, and you can find them all at your local grocery store.

    Ingredients needed to make recipe.
    • Pre-Cooked Mini Sausages: These give the sausage crescent rolls their meaty flavor without making them greasy and save time.
    • Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar cheese adds melty, tasty flavor.
    • Crescent Roll Dough: Crescent dough bakes up golden and flaky on the outside and soft and tender on the inside.

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

    Substitutions and Variations

Don't have the correct ingredients on hand? Or want to change something up? Here are some helpful tips for you to change up these sausage crescent rolls.

    • Sausage: You can use your favorite flavor of uncooked mini sausage links as long as you precook them according to package directions before wrapping with dough and baking.
    • Cheese: Feel free to use jack cheese, mozzarella or your favorite cheese or cheese blend instead. Any cheese will work for this recipe.
    • Add Eggs: Scramble 6 large eggs with a tablespoon or two of milk and a sprinkling of salt and pepper and divide amongst 24 crescent rolls. Add on top of the cheese, if desired, before rolling and baking.
    • Brush With Butter: Melt 3 tablespoons of butter or garlic butter and brush tops of crescents right before baking. Sprinkle a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, Italian seasoning or your favorite, if desired.
    • Spicy: Add a bit of chili pepper flakes, diced jalapeno pepper, our jalapeno powder, smoked jalapeno powder, or chipotle powder over the top of the sausage and cheese filling for a bit of heat. You can also serve up our homemade hot pepper sauce on the table as well.

    Instructions

Remove from pan and serve immediately.

Hint: Make sure to add crescent rolls to preheated oven to avoid soggy bottom of crescent rolls.

    Storage

Refrigerator: Store in an air-tight container for up to 4 days.

Freezer: Wrap the bites in plastic wrap and store in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Reheat: Microwave at 20-second intervals until heated through but are best heated inside your oven on 350 degrees for 5-7 minutes or heated through.

Make Ahead: You can cook your sausage and grate your cheese the night before, even assemble your crescent rolls a few hours in advance and refrigerate covered if desired. Then, bake when needed after allowing rolls to come to room temperature for 15 minutes before placing in oven for best results.

What to Serve with Sausage Crescent Rolls

First, I recommend serving them with maple syrup, sour cream, mustard or onion ketchup drizzled on top or on the side for dipping.

    Tips

This is an incredibly easy recipe, so we really only have one tip. It's a simple one, too!

    • Use a foil instead of parchment paper for easy cleanup as foil evenly distributes heat.
    • Don't add too much filling or your sausage rolls may open up.
    • Use a metal pan to bake for even heat distribution as glass or ceramic dishes offer uneven heat and can result in soggy bottoms.
    • Use whatever size baking sheet you have on hand as the crescent rolls will not spread very much so you can put them pretty close together.
    • Make sure oven is fully preheated before adding crescent rolls to avoid soggy bottoms.
    • Place baking sheet on a higher shelf so that the top will brown faster.

    FAQ

Do you have questions about this recipe? These are the most commonly asked questions about sausage crescent rolls.

    What are sausage crescent rolls?

Sausage crescent rolls are an easy breakfast, brunch, or appetizer item made with breakfast sausage and cheddar cheese rolled up in a crescent roll triangle and baked until golden.

How do you keep sausage crescent rolls from being greasy?

For two reasons, it's important to use pre-cooked sausage links for this recipe. First, raw sausage won't fully cook by the time the crescent dough is finished. Second, even if it did fully cook, the grease released would make the crescent rolls greasy and soggy.

What kinds of sausage can I use for these rolls?

You can use any kind of sausage you like. Each one will make a different kind of crescent bite. Try spicy sausage, maple, original, or your favorite.
