Why You’ll Love This Nutella Milkshake Recipe

    • It’s simple: The main ingredients are ice cream and Nutella spread, making this milkshake recipe a breeze.
    • It’s crowd-pleasing: Everyone you share this milkshake with will be impressed by its cocoa hazelnut flavor and creamy texture.
    • It can be customized: There are several ways to make this recipe your own, so don’t be afraid to get creative.

    Ingredients

The ingredients for this Nutella milkshake are incredibly simple and readily available at almost any grocery store.

    • Vanilla ice cream: You can use any brand and variety of vanilla ice cream that you like best. Even vanilla frozen yogurt would work wonderfully in this Nutella shake.
    • Milk: I like to add a splash of milk to adjust the consistency of the milkshake. It makes it easier to sip or drink through a straw. I use whole or 2% milk, but any kind of milk will work—including plant-based!
    • Nutella: Classic Nutella hazelnut spread is best for this recipe. I’ve tried other brands and it’s just not the same!
    • Whipped cream: Use canned whipped cream, whipped topping, or your favorite homemade recipe. It’s an optional topping that takes this recipe over the top.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Banana Nutella milkshake: Add a whole banana for a chocolate-covered banana version.
    • Strawberry Nutella milkshake: Try this recipe with fresh or frozen strawberries or even some strawberry syrup for a fruity twist.
    • Peanut butter Nutella milkshake: Peanut butter cups are a great addition to this Nutella shake. Add a few for some peanut buttery flavor.
    • Caramel Nutella milkshake: A drizzle of homemade or store-bought caramel sauce adds a salty and buttery flavor that complements the rich Nutella.
    • Nutella Oreo milkshake: Try blending some Oreos into the shake for more chocolate flavor and texture.

How to Make a Nutella Milkshake

Here are the instructions on how to make a milkshake with Nutella at home! An optional step is to add a Nutella rim and coat it with crushed hazelnuts. It makes for a great presentation (and also tastes scrumptious).

Step 1: Process the ingredients. Combine all of the milkshake ingredients in a blender. Then, blend until everything is well combined and silky smooth.

Pouring a milkshake mixture into a tall, clear glass with a straw on one side and a kitchen napkin on the other.

Step 2: Add to glasses. Pour the luscious Nutella milkshake into individual glasses.

Step 3: Garnish and serve. Take the presentation to the next level by adding whipped cream, a drizzle of Nutella, and chopped hazelnuts. Enjoy!

    Recipe Tips

    • Allow the ice cream to soften: Set the vanilla ice cream on the counter for about 15 minutes before you start working on your milkshake.
    • Chill the glass: Before serving, place your milkshake glass in the freezer for a few minutes to keep your drink extra cold.
    • Stir if needed: While blending, you may need to stop and use a rubber spatula to scrape anything stuck on the sides and stir it back into the mixture.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Enjoy a cold milkshake with Nutella alongside a scrumptious dessert like magic cookie bars or tiramisu cookies.
    • Garnish your milkshake with banana-flavored syrup for a sweet and fruity flavor.
    • Shakes pair wonderfully with burgers and hot dogs. Serve this one with baked chili dogs or an old fashioned burger.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use a food processor to make the milkshake?

Of course! If you don't have a blender, feel free to use a food processor, and process until all of the ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture is smooth.

    Can I save the leftovers?

I don’t recommend saving leftovers. Do not make more than you plan to serve. If it sits too long in the refrigerator, it will become soupy. If you freeze it, it will seize and become icy.

Why is my milkshake so thin?

Either the ice cream was too soft or you added too much milk. Add another small scoop of ice cream or some ice cubes to thicken it.

    • Blend for about 30 seconds, or until you reach your desired consistency.

    Notes

    • To make the ice cream easier to blend, set it at room temperature for about 15 minutes before you start the shake.
    • If you don't have a blender, you can make this shake with a food processor instead. Process until smooth, about 1 minute, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
    • Don’t save any leftovers because the texture will not remain the same. You can keep the mixture in the refrigerator for up to 1 hour to keep it cold, but make the milkshakes on demand for best results.
