These gender reveal cake pops are so easy to make and full of the sweet flavors of cake and frosting. They're an adorable way to make any gender reveal party tasty and festive.

A blue cake pop and pink cake pop side by side.

Gender reveals can either be adorable and joyous or the next installment of America's Funniest Home Videos.

If you'd rather have your guests enjoy a tasty treat instead of having them watch your spouse get hit in the crotch with a rogue gender reveal rocket, then this is the recipe for you.

I constantly shake my head when I see all the gender reveal disasters online. I was pregnant before these reveals were a thing, and most of them seem like disasters waiting to happen. Not this gender reveal idea, though!

Why You Will Love this Recipe

    • These blue and pink cake pops are as adorable as they are delicious.
    • They're loaded with plenty of cake and frosting flavors!
    • They make great favors for your gender reveal party.

Top Tip: Do not skip the chilling step on your cake balls before dipping them in the melting chocolate, or the frosting won't coat or stick correctly.

    Ingredients

It only takes a few simple ingredients to make this recipe. You'll find them all easily at your local grocery store. For quantities, see the recipe card at the end of the post.

    • White cake mix: Makes the cake mixing easy for this gender reveal cake idea!
    • White frosting: Mixed in with the cooked cake to make the cake pops moist and delicious!
    • Pink or blue gel food coloring: Get perfect pink or blue cake pops with delightful vibrant color without effecting the consistency of the cake.
    • White almond bark: Melted and used for dipping the cake pops.
    • Blue and pink colored sprinkles: For more festivity!
    • Cake pop sticks: Check for these in a craft store or you can easily buy them online.

How to Make Gender Reveal Cake Pops

This recipe is incredibly simple. It's mostly a matter of baking a cake and then smashing it up. LOL

    1. Make the cake batter according to the package directions, except use whole milk instead of water, if possible. Add cake extender, an extra egg and vanilla.
Oil being poured into bowl with cake mix, water, and eggs.
    1. Add blue or pink food coloring to the batter depending on the sex of the baby.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Size matters: Use a 9 x 13 cake pan for one color cake pops or use two 8-inch round pans to prepare half blue and half pink cake pops.
    • Your favorite cake works great! But lighter colored cake flavors will show up the coloring much better!
    • Make gender reveal truffles instead. Follow the instructions above but skip the sticks.
    • Use any candy melt brand for the coating. You can use any brand of chocolate candy melts, bark, or chips that you prefer. Learn more about melting white chocolate if you want to look for other options.
    • No vegetable oil: Use coconut oil instead to make your melted chocolate smooth if needed.
    • No white chocolate candy melts? Use white chocolate chips instead but don't forget to add a little bit of oil too to smooth the melted chocolate out if needed.
    • No styrofoam to hold the sticks? You can also stick the cake pops in a cardboard box if you don’t have a block of styrofoam or order a stand with your treat sticks.
    • Make them flat instead of round. You can also simplify the cake pop by rolling out a single 1 ½ tablespoon-sized ball per cake pop and continuing from there.
    • Forget the stick. Just like our turkey cake pops simply press your dipped cake pop onto the cookie of your choice and make a cake bite!

    Storage

Room Temperature: If made with vanilla or buttercream frosting, these cake pops can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature for three to five days.

Refrigerator: Cake pops made with cream cheese frosting must be stored in the refrigerator. They'll last for up to five days in the fridge.

Make Ahead: These pops do very well at room temperature or in the refrigerator, so you can make them up to three days ahead of time.

What to Serve with Cake Pops

Cake pops like these pair well with other sweet treats and savory options like salty snacks. That's usually how you'll find them served at parties. Here are some ideas for you to consider!

I love this brunch charcuterie board, which works for more than just breakfast or brunch in my book!

Broken glass jello and these mermaid cupcakes or rainbow cupcakes also make a nice addition to the dessert table at your party!

Use blue or pink frosting on these fruity pebble cookies to make them perfect for a shower or gender reveal party.

For more savory ideas, I love these cheesy mushroom appetizer toasts and this burrata cheese board.

    Tips

    • Use a 2-cup measuring cup for dipping the cake balls so you have adequate depth to insert the cake ball.
    • Immediately remove any cake crumbs that might fall into the melted candy before dipping a new batch.
    • Add sprinkles immediately after dipping the cake balls so they stick to the coating.

    FAQ

    Why did my candy crack?

If you leave your cake balls in the freezer too long and don't let them warm up a bit, the drastic change in temperature can cause the candy to crack as it melts.

Why are my cake balls crumbly?

You didn't add enough frosting. Frosting is what binds these cake balls together. If you don't use enough, they'll be crumbly.

Should I store cake pops in the refrigerator?

Unless they're made with cream cheese frosting, you don't have to. It's largely a matter of personal preference.

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350ºF.
    • Prepare 9x13 cake pan with parchment paper extended over the ends for easy removal. (Use two 8-inch pans to prepare half blue and half pink cake pops if expecting fraternal twins).
    • In a mason jar add flour, sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Give it a shake to blend and add 11 level tablespoon to the 13.25 oz or 14 oz dry cake mix and stir until blnded well.
    • Prepare cake mix batter according to box directions. Use milk instead of water, if possible. Add extra egg and vanilla.
    • Add blue or pink gel food coloring until desired color is reached. The exact amount will depend on the type of food coloring you are using.
    • Pour batter into prepared pan.
    • Bake according to box directions or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cake to cool.
    • Prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
    • Using a fork, crumble the cake right in the pan.
    • Add frosting and work with hands until the dough holds together and you can form a ball.
    • Using a 2 tablespoon scoop, scoop dough, form it into balls, and place balls on your prepared baking sheet.
    • Melt a small amount of almond bark. Dip skewers into melted bark and then push them into the cake pops.
    • Freeze for 1 hour.
    • Melt remaining white almond bark. If it seems too thick, you could add a small amount of coconut oil to thin it a bit. This will depend on the consistency of your bark.
    • Roll each cake pop in melted bark, allowing excess to drip off.
    • Add sprinkles quickly before bark hardens.
    • Chill before serving.
