    Ingredients in Garlic Parmesan Chicken

Overhead photo of all the ingredients needed to make Baked Garlic Parmesan Chicken on the counter top.

You probably have most of these ingredients in your kitchen already.

    • chicken breasts - Chicken thighs are fine too.
    • parmesan cheese
    • all-purpose flour
    • breadcrumbs -I prefer panko bread crumbs.
    • eggs
    • Italian seasoning
    • garlic powder
    • salt
    • pepper
    • cooking spray

How to make Garlic Parmesan Chicken

This all comes together very quickly!

    Step One: Prep

Ingredients for breading the chicken are placed close together on the counter top.

Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with tinfoil and cooking spray. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Rinse and pat the chicken pieces dry with paper towels.

In a small bowl, stir the minced garlic into the melted butter.  I often pick up a stick of garlic butter from the store to make things a bit easier instead of making it myself.

In another bowl mix the Panko, Parmesan, garlic salt, Italian seasoning, and pepper.

    Step Two: Coat

The chicken is coated in three mixtures. Flour, egg and bread crumb.

One at a time, dip the chicken into the flour mixture and eggs, and then into the Parmesan breadcrumb mixture.

Place coated chicken pieces onto your prepared baking sheet or skillet.

    Step Three: Bake or Fry

Fry over medium-high heat for about 6 minutes per side if using chicken breasts.

Bake for 20-25 minutes if making baked garlic parmesan chicken thighs.  If baking strips, 15-20 minutes. or chicken breasts for 30-35 minutes.  Be sure that the chicken is cooked and the juices run clear before removing it from your oven.  Serve with salt and pepper! Enjoy!

    Substitutions

Don’t have the correct ingredients on hand? Or want to change something up? Here are some helpful tips for you to change this recipe for garlic parmesan chicken.

    • Swap the Panko bread crumbs for Italian bread crumbs. If you make this swap, you probably want to cut back on the Italian seasoning in the recipe.
    • As mentioned earlier, you can use chicken thighs or breast strips for this recipe. Bone-in thighs come out super juicy.
    • Instead of eggs stir a teaspoon or two of minced garlic into the melted butter.  I often pick up a stick of garlic butter from the store to make things a bit easier instead of making it myself and drizzling the remaining butter on chicken before baking.

    Variations

Want to personalize this baked chicken recipe? Here are some ideas!

    • Soak the chicken buttermilk before dipping it in the breadcrumb mixture for a tangier taste and to make the chicken more tender.
    • Make garlic parmesan boneless skinless chicken thighs.
    • Coat the chicken with mayonnaise or Greek yogurt before dipping it in breadcrumbs.
    • If you're not a fan of garlic, simply leave that ingredient out.
    • Add different seasonings like paprika, rosemary, or crushed red pepper flakes.

    Tips

    • You can lighten this recipe up even more by coating only one side of the chicken.
    • Pound chicken breasts to equal thickness (if using) to ensure all of the chicken is cooked through.
    • Don’t cook on too high of heat or the outside will over brown before the chicken is cooked through.
    • Make chicken strips and reduce cooking time.

    FAQ

My chicken took longer to bake through. Did I do something wrong?

The cooking time will vary based on the thickness of your chicken. If using chicken breasts, it is best they are not too thick. Place thicker pieces of chicken into a large zipper bag and pound until desired thickness is reached. You can use a meat thermometer to ensure chicken is cooked through. A safe cooking temperature for all poultry is 165 degrees F.

How do I get oven fried chicken golden brown on top?

Spray the top of chicken with a little cooking spray or broil for the last few minutes of cooking, until golden brown.
