The day I made this, my husband and I were out all morning at the lake. Then when we got home, we were starving but didn't want to make a huge meal. So, we whipped up a batch of this shrimp dip and just ate it with tortilla chips and some toasted French bread that was starting to go stale. It was perfect! We love spicy food and this hit the spot after we had been in the sun all day.
This can be eaten as an appetizer or even a quick snack. Try serving with tortilla chips, crackers, tortillas
I love spicy food so the jalapenos added just enough kick to make me happy without making my mouth feel like fire. Just enough spice to give this dip a little extra flavor.
History of Shrimp Dip
The dish was popularized in the 1950s by home cooks such as Betty Crocker because canned shrimp were readily available.
The origin of the dish's name is unclear. It has been speculated that it is derived from a recipe with "Shrimp Creole" type ingredients and that it was given its present name to avoid the racial implication of the word "Creole". Others say that dip is slang for scoop, so the dish became known as shrimp "scoop" because it is scooped with crackers or chips.
In the U.S., shrimp dip is most commonly eaten in the Midwestern states, but it can be found nationwide.
What is spicy shrimp dip
Shrimp Dip is a type of American hors d'oeuvre made with shrimp and cream cheese. It is normally served as an appetizer, and commonly sold at parties or as part of catering trays.
Should I buy precooked shrimp for this recipe
Yes, I definitely recommend picking up precooked shrimp. Plus, save some time and energy and buy peeled and deveined shrimp. I'm always looking for ways to save time and work in the kitchen and precleaned and precooked shrimp is certainly the way to go.
What can I substitute for Cream Cheese
If you are not a fan of cream cheese, there are some other options that will taste great as well. Try using a mixture of sour cream and mayonnaise to keep the creamy texture but with less fat. Alternatively, make a dip version by combining drained yogurt with flavored mayonnaise, which gives a similar texture and taste.
What type of cheese should I use
Cheddar is the most common choice used in Spicy Shrimp Dip; however, I like to use Colby Jack. I just find that Colby jack holds better and is easier to work with.

The options are endless! Make it fit your tastes and what you like the most. I personally love serving this Spicy Shrimp Dip with some Focaccia or Pita bread. If those aren't really your thing, try using some crackers or chips.

Traditionally, Spicy Shrimp Dip is served with crackers, however it can also be an excellent dipping sauce for vegetables and meat. You could also dip toasted bread which is my favorite way to eat shrimp dip.
