Tender apples and sweet strawberries come together in a delicious filling that's topped with a sweet crumble. It's the perfect sweet treat to end any meal. Getting hungry? Good!

When fall and winter come around, I love making hot, delicious baked desserts and treats, and one of my favorites is the classic crumble. I've been making crumbles for decades, and I've been making them in the air fryer for years. Today, we're going to make a delicious, air fried apple and strawberry crumble to die for.

Strawberry Apple Crumble with vanilla ice cream served in a white ramekin. Chunks of apple and strawberry topped with dry fruits and oats.

    Air Fryer Strawberry Apple Crumble

This was inspired by my apple crisp with caramel recipe on this site. I loved the flavor, and I thought strawberries would be a nice addition. I also took some inspiration from my strawberry crisp recipe to create a recipe that perfectly combined both flavors.

    Ingredients

You don't need a ton of ingredients to make this delicious dessert, and most of the ingredients are actually kitchen staples. The only things you might have to buy are apples and strawberries.

    For the Filling

    • Fresh strawberries, halved
    • Large red apples, diced
    • Vanilla extract
    • Orange juice
    • Maple syrup
    • Apple pie spice
    • Flaked almonds, roasted
    • Powdered sugar

    For the Crumble

    • All purpose flour
    • Rolled oats
    • Ground ginger
    • Apple pie spice
    • Maple syrup
    • Cold butter, chopped finely

    Instructions

This recipe might take a few steps, but that doesn't mean it's hard. In fact, it's a simple recipe that's very easy to make.

    Step 1: Prep Your Fruit

Halve your fresh strawberries. Using a sharp pairing knife, peel, core, and coarsely chop your apples.

Step 2: Make the Fruit Filling

In a large bowl, combine the apples, strawberries, vanilla, orange juice, and maple syrup.

    Step 3: Make the Crumble

To make the spiced crumble topping, combine all purpose flour, rolled oats, ground ginger, apple pie spice, maples syrup, and finely chopped cold butter. Using your fingertips, rub the mixture together, incorporating the butter with the other ingredients until it forms small clumps.

Step 3: Air Fry the Filling

Grease four four-inch oven-safe dishes or ramekins and divide the fruit mixture evenly among them. Air fry in a preheated air fryer for about 10 minutes or until the fruit it almost tender.

Step 4: Add the Crumble and Continue Air Frying

Top the fruit with the crumble topping and cover the dishes with foil. Air fry for about 15 more minutes or until the fruit is tender and bubbling, and the crumble is golden brown.

    Step 5: Finish it Off

Remove the strawberry apple crumble and top with flake almonds and dust with powdered sugar. Serve with ice cream.

Hint: Although some people say you don't have to preheat an air fryer, I find that things cook better when you do. It only takes about five minutes to do, and the food cooks better, in my opinion.

    Substitutions

While you probably have most of the ingredients for this recipe in your kitchen already, there might be times when you don't have exactly what you need. These handy substitutions are an easy fix.

    • Apple Pie Spice - Make your own with ground cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, ginger, and nutmeg.
    • Pumpkin Pie Spice - If you don't have apple pie spice or its ingredients, pumpkin pie spice works well.
    • Lemon Juice - Use bottled lemon juice in place of freshly-squeezed.
    • Gluten-Free - Replace the flour with almond meal to make a gluten-free dessert.
    • Any Baking Apple - If you don't have classic Granny Smith apples, try Crispin, Gala, Golden Delicious, Northern Spy, or Cortland.

    Variations

Want to personalize this strawberry apple crumble recipe? Here are some of my tried and true tips for changing up this recipe.

    • Pears - Pears add a slightly different flavor to this crumble while retaining an apple-like texture.
    • Blueberries - Blueberries give a great flavor to this dish when added to the apples.
    • Chopped Roasted Nuts - Change out the almonds for chopped roasted pecans, walnuts, or almonds.
