The Journey From Simple Cake to Snickers Bar Layer Cake
This Snickers cake recipe combines two of our favorite things into the ultimate dessert. Think about it. A rich, decadent layer cake made with all the flavor of a Snickers bar?
If you can think of a better cake, I'd be interested in hearing about it. This cake is chocolaty, moist, and packed wit sweet, sweet goodness, but without cakes, and of course, the Snickers bar. We'd never be able to enjoy it.
As always I want to take a brief look at both cake and Snickers bars to get a look into the past that helped make this cake.
History of Cake
Traditionally, a cake is a sweet baked food made from flour, sugar, and various other ingredients. In their oldest and simplest form, cakes were actually modified bread. These days cakes are made in more ways than you can count, being as simple or as complex as the baker wishes.
The cake has been around for centuries. The word cake itself is actually Viking in origin, coming from the ancient Norse word kaka. Ancient Greek called this baked good plakous. Believe it or not, Romans called cakes placenta.
Cakes remained nothing more than sweetened bread even until their earliest appearance in England. The first “modern” cake, the sponge cake was invented during the Renaissance period. Most food historians agree that this probably happened in Spain.
History of the Snickers Bar
Did you know that the Snickers Bar is actually named after a horse? Yep, a horse. Intrigued? Read on.
In 1930, Frank Mars (of Mars Bar fame), named a new candy bar creation after his much beloved horse, Snickers. Funnily enough, the name of the family farm where Snickers lived was called, wait for it, Milky Way.
Unlike traditional candy bars of the day, the Snickers bar wasn't a hard solid chunk of chocolate. Rather, it was a confection made of nougat, peanut, and caramel which was then coated in a chocolate outer layer.
Although the price of the Snickers Bar sparked some controversy at first - it cost 20 cents versus 5 cents as most other candy bars were priced - it proved to be an almost instant success. In fact, the Snickers Bar went on to become the best selling candy bar on Earth.
Why Make a Snickers Bar Layer Cake?
Some people look at Snickers candy-stuffed marshmallow buttercream, sandwiched between two layers of dark chocolate cake and topped with chocolate frosting, dulce de leche, roasted peanuts, and more Snickers and ask, "why?".
I look at Snickers candy-stuffed marshmallow buttercream, sandwiched between two layers of dark chocolate cake and topped with chocolate frosting, dulce de leche, roasted peanuts, and more Snickers and ask, "why not?"
If that doesn't answer the question enough for you, just think about how many layers of flavor you can add to a simple chocolate cake using Snickers as the primary ingredient. Snickers is a candy bar that has everything going for it.
Apply that to a cake and a whole new world of possibilities bursts wide open! No longer is the satisfying taste of Snickers confined to a single bar, or (shudder) a Snickers mini. This Snickers bar layer cake is what Snickers were made for.
If you aren't sure about how much work a cake like this will require, don't let that stop you. This recipe is all about mixing ingredients and it couldn't be easier to make! Read on to get the secret to making incredible cakes in a fraction of the time.
How to Make a Fancy Cake With Limited Time
We all have those big upcoming events that we need to make a cake for. But you may be hesitant to rise to the challenge if you aren't used to baking, or have limited time. Don't worry.
There is a secret to making more complex and more intricate cakes without overworking yourself in the kitchen. All you need to do is make the cake in advance so you don't have to worry about it.
That means that all you need to do to have the perfect Snickers bar layer cake is follow this recipe for all the good stuff that goes on the cake and then simply apply it to pre baked layers just waiting to be smothered in Snickers flavors.
The spreading and pouring is the easiest way to decorate a cake, so you'll have no pressure at all where it comes to presentation.
When all you have to do is mix and pour to get one of the best tasting layer cakes you've ever tried, there is no reason not to freeze up some chocolate cakes ahead of time in delicious anticipation.
How to Freeze Chocolate Cake
Chocolate cake is very freezable and it makes cake decoration very convenient. You are able to have the layers premade and ready to go, so you don't have to do anything but mix up the frosting and top your Snickers bar layer cake with candy bar crumbles peanuts, dulce de leche and chocolate.
Freezing a premade cake is simple and doesn't take a lot of extra work. Simply wrap the cake in plastic. Make sure it is air tight, but that the cake can get plenty of air circulation around it.
Chocolate is one of the best cakes for freezing. You can make it as early as 3 months in advance if you freeze it properly. If you plan to store your cake for longer than a few days in the freezer, wrap it in a second layer of plastic, or add another second covering such as foil or a freezer bag that you let the air out of before sealing.
The second layer is ideal for longer storage. Another helpful tip is to use a cardboard round to help keep the cake bottom flat and to make it more stackable in the freezer.
Just Mix and Assemble
Chilled cakes are easier to work with. They are firmer and they tend to crumble less. You can cut them to your desired shape with far less hassle and you don't have to worry much about crumbs getting stuck in the posting which is always a bummer.
SO aside from cutting your time down by pre baking your cake and putting it in storage, you also make the cake better prepared for the rest of the process. That process involves taking the recipe below and using it to transform basic chocolate cake into a candy bar lover's dream!
There are really only three parts to this recipe and it involves a candy bar marshmallow buttercream that you fill the layers of the cake with and a caramelly chocolate topping that is also very easy to make.
The great part about all of this is that you don't have to do any intricate decorating. You simply put the cake together, sprinkle the toppings on and you're done! Make lots of chocolate cakes so you can have them ready whenever you want to make this recipe again.
You are bound to get future requests from anybody who tries this cake.
