I’ve spent a fair bit of time perfecting this recipe, and now, I’m confident that once you give this recipe a try, you won’t go back to any other banana bread recipe ever!
You’ll find quite a few banana bread recipe experiments here on my blog! There’s a luscious chocolate chunk banana bread, a chocolate and cream cheese banana bread that’s such a treat, and then a simple pumpkin banana bread, Peanut butter banana brownies for fall!
But this one in specific, is what I almost always turn to when I’m trying to make a simple, wholesome banana bread that everyone will enjoy!
Why You’ll Love This Banana Bread Recipe with Chocolate Chips
- Perfectly sweet: The delicate sweetness of the ripe bananas is what makes this banana bread shine. It’s not overly sweet, and has a delicate flavor you’ll love.
- Moist and delish: It has a delightful crumb and a rich and moist texture that’s just perfect.
- Easy to make: Making the banana bread is super easy too! No complicated steps and cooking techniques.
Ingredients
- Bananas: You’ll need overripe bananas for this recipe. It’s actually the perfect way to put them to use. And of course, my banana chocolate chip muffins too!
- Flour: Just regular all-purpose flour.
- Sugar: Just a bit, for that extra sweetness and tenderness.
- Baking soda: To help the bread rise and get slightly fluffy.
- Sour cream: For its rich, tangy flavor and which works perfectly with the sweet, sugary mixture. It also makes the bread incredibly moist. If you don’t have sour cream, unflavored Greek yogurt will do the trick.
- Eggs: To add structure and richness to the banana chocolate chip bread.
- Butter: For the richness and flavor.
- Vanilla: For that beautiful aroma and natural sweetness.
- Chocolate: I used semi-sweet chocolate here, chopped into small chunks. You can use chocolate chips too!
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Peanut butter yum: In addition to the chocolate in the recipe, add some peanut butter chips to make a peanut butter version of the bread.
- Make it nutty: Throw some chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, or hazelnuts into the mix to make chocolate chip banana nut bread.
- Gluten-free: To make a gluten-free version of this recipe, swap the all purpose flour for any gluten-free flour of your choice.
How to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees and greasing the bottom and sides of a nonstick loaf pan.
Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. Combine the flour with salt, sugar and baking soda in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Prep the bananas. Mash the bananas with a fork until they have an applesauce-like consistency.
Step 3: Prepare the batter. Mix together the sour cream, vanilla, eggs, butter and vanilla in a bowl. Add the dry ingredients and chocolate to the bowl. Mix again until the ingredients are just combined.
Step 4: Prep the loaf pan. Sprinkle some flour into a greased loaf pan and dust off the excess.
Step 5: Prep for baking. Pour the banana bread mixture into the loaf pan and tap a couple of times to level it off.
Step 6: Bake, cool, and serve. Pop it in the preheated oven and bake for 60-65 minutes. Remove, let it cool for a few minutes, and then transfer it to a wire rack to let it cool down completely. Serve and enjoy!
Storage
- Storing: Store your leftover banana and chocolate chip bread at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 4 days, or for a week in the refrigerator.
- Freezing: You can freeze the banana bread for up to 3 months if you want to enjoy it later. Just allow the loaf to cool down completely, then wrap it up in plastic wrap, followed by some foil, and then freeze it. Doing this will help prevent freezer burn. Alternatively, you can store it in a freezer-safe container.
Serving Suggestions
This rich and delicious banana bread with chocolate chips is perfect with a cup of coffee or tea, as a light breakfast or an evening snack. With my whipped Dalgona cloud coffee, it is a match made in heaven!
You can also enjoy it on its own, or spread some of your favorite nut butter or a sweet breakfast spread on it. I love slathering on some of my homemade almond butter or chocolate hazelnut spread on it.
And of course, you can always top a slice with some whipped cream and fresh fruits to turn it into a delicious breakfast that tastes like dessert.
Expert Tips
- Temperature matters: Start with room temperature eggs and cool melted butter for this recipe. This helps everything mix nicely and you’ll have the perfect texture you’re looking for without overmixing.
- Choose right: Remember to choose soft, overripe bananas here. They should ideally have brown spots on the peel and should feel soft to touch. These will be much sweeter than regular bananas, and have the perfect texture which we need to make a moist chocolate chip banana bread.
- Don’t overmix: This one’s an important step with almost all baked goodies. Mix the batter just until all the ingredients are well combined, and avoid overmixing the it.
Recipe FAQs
Don’t have those brownish ripped bananas? You can speed up the process by placing them in a paper bag overnight. Another great trick is to prick their skin a few times with a fork and microwave them for 30-60 seconds until they soften.
It should take about 60-65 minutes for the banana chocolate chip bread to cook to perfection, and it should have a nice golden brown exterior. You can also do a toothpick test to check if the bread is cooked from the center.
