Cranberry and tequila? Oh yes. They're the duo you didn't know you needed until now. This fresh cranberry margarita is bold, tart, and festive - everything a good cocktail should be.
If you've tried my tequila berry cocktail or cranberry shrub cocktail, you already know I have a soft spot for fruity, tangy drinks that look as good as they taste - and this one's no exception.
From Our Kitchen to Yours

There's just something about the holidays that makes gathering in the kitchen feel extra special. It's where everyone ends up talking, laughing, and maybe sneaking a taste of whatever's being made, like these turkey cranberry sliders.
This cranberry margarita has become one of my favorite holiday drinks to make. It's quick to shake up, looks beautiful in the glass, and adds an instant touch of cheer. I love how the tart cranberries balance the smooth tequila, creating a festive but easygoing drink.
Let's take a look at what you'll need to make it - and a few easy ways to make it your own.

Ingredients

- White Tequila: Go with a good-quality silver (blanco) tequila made from 100% agave. It gives a clean, smooth flavor that pairs beautifully with tart cranberries.
- Triple Sec or Orange Liqueur: Orange and cranberry are a classic match. Triple Sec is the margarita gold standard, but you also use Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or even Orange Curaçao. Each adds its own touch of citrus sweetness.
- Lime: Fresh is best! Skip the bottled juice and squeeze real limes for the brightest flavor. The juice sharpens the cranberry notes and complements the salted rim.
- Cranberries: Fresh or frozen work. They bring that signature tartness and a pop of color. Save a few to float on top for garnish.
- Salt for the glass: Use margarita salt or a mixture of kosher salt and sugar for a rimmed glass that's salty and sweet.
See the recipe card below for the full ingredient list with the exact quantities of each ingredient.
Cranberry Margarita Variations
- Add a Little Sparkle: Top your cocktail with club soda, sparkling water, or even a splash of Prosecco for a bubbly, party-ready twist.
- Sweeten It Up with Syrup: If you like a sweeter cranberry flavor, try adding a spoonful of my homemade cranberry syrup or a plain syrup for sweetness without the additional boost of cranberry. I love the syrup for deepening the color and giving the drink a richer, festive finish.
- No Fresh Cranberries? No problem! Use 100 % cranberry juice instead. Go for a brand with real juice and minimal added sugar to keep that fresh, tart flavor.
- Make a Frozen Cranberry Margarita: Blend everything with a handful of ice until smooth and frosty. Add more ice as needed for your perfect consistency. It's a fun twist for warm-weather holidays or parties.
- Softer Citrus Flavor: If you find the cranberry a little too tart, swap in orange juice for part (or all) of the lime juice. It softens the flavor and adds a gentle sweetness that works beautifully with tequila.

How to Make a Cranberry Margarita
To get started, grab all your ingredients, place the margarita salt or coarse salt and sugar mixture on a plate, and prepare your garnishes and lime slices needed for adding the salt to the glass rim. Now you're ready to start mixing.

Step 1: Combine tequila and cranberries. Add the tequila and cranberries to a jar or container.

Step 2: Muddle. Use the back of a wooden spoon or muddler to gently crush the cranberries. This releases their juice and color.

Step 3: Pour into shaker: Add the cranberry mixture to your shaker along with the Triple Sec liqueur.

Step 4: Squeeze the lime: Add the lime juice to the shaker glass. Cover and shake vigorously.

Step 5: Salt glasses and pour. Wet the rim of the glass with a slice of lime. Dip the glass into the salt to coat the rim. Fill the glass with ice to the top and pour the margarita mixture over the ice.

Step 6: Garnish and serve. Garnish each cranberry margarita with lime wheels, fresh rosemary sprigs, and sugared cranberries. Enjoy with a few party appetizers like our deviled potatoes and our goat cheese dip with bacon and pecans.

Recipe Tips
- Muddle Gently, Don't Smash: Press the fresh cranberries just enough to release the juice. Over-muddling can make the drink bitter.
- Shake With Plenty of Ice: A long, vigorous shake chills the drink fast and gives it that crisp, bar-style texture without watering it down.
- Chill the Glasses: Pop them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before serving to keep the drink cold and make the salted rim sparkle.
- Freeze a Few Cranberries: They make gorgeous, jewel-like garnishes that chill the drink without diluting it.
- Rim Magic: Mix coarse salt with a pinch of sugar and orange zest for a festive rim that complements both the sweet and tart notes.
- Sweetness Control: Adjust to taste with a splash of cranberry syrup or simple syrup. Perfect if your cranberries are extra tart.
Serving Suggestions
- Garnish: Finish your cranberry margarita with a salted rim and a festive garnish. I love a sprig of rosemary, a twist of lime peel, and a few cranberries threaded onto a cocktail pick.
- Pair It With: This drink is meant to be sipped slowly, so it's perfect to serve with appetizers, like these cream cheese stuffed jalapenos, or with my white chocolate cranberry nut fudge for dessert.
- Festive Main Dishes: Swap out your regular margarita for a cranberry margarita with these rotisserie chicken tacos.

Recipe FAQs
Absolutely! Swap the tequila and triple sec for orange juice and a non-alcoholic spirit (or a little extra cranberry juice). Top with sparkling water or soda for fizz.
Definitely! Add all your cocktail ingredients into a blender with ice. Blend until smooth, adding more ice as needed. Serve your frozen cranberry margarita in a rimmed glass with your desired garnishes.
Sure thing! If you don't have fresh or frozen cranberries, you can easily substitute cranberry juice or cranberry cocktail.
Use about 2 to 3 ounces, or roughly ¼ to ⅓ cup, of 100% cranberry juice for each cocktail. It adds that signature tart flavor and rich red color. If you're using cranberry cocktail instead, start with about 2 ounces since it's sweeter and not quite as tangy. Taste before serving and adjust as needed. A quick squeeze of lime can also help balance the flavors beautifully.
Yes! Just multiply the ingredients for the number of servings you need, mix everything together, and chill until serving time. Pour over fresh ice and garnish each glass just before serving.

Notes
- Make a Pitcher: Multiply the ingredients to match the number of servings needed and refrigerate a day before needed. When ready to serve rim your glasses, serve over ice and garnish.
- Storage: Store leftovers without ice for up to two days inside your refrigerator. Stir and pour over ice when serving.
- Make it sweeter: Add a small amount of simple syrup at a time until desired level of sweetness is reached or add some cranberry juice cocktail, to make your margarita sweeter, if desired.
- Chill your ingredients: Refrigerate ingredients, including your glasses, before creating your cocktail for best results.
- Use Cocktail Shaker: If possible shake ingredients vigorously before serving instead of stirring for best results.
- Strain Your Drink: After shaking, use cocktail shaker or a strainer as you pour the margarita into your glass to prevent any pulp or ice chips from ending up in your drink.
