Coffee may be doing more in the body than simply sharpening alertness. New research suggests habitual coffee drinkers may differ in body composition and hormone balance in ways that could matter for long-term health.
What the Finnish study actually found

Researchers at the University of Oulu examined 2,264 participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, all age 46, to see how usual coffee intake related to metabolism and hormone status. According to the study, people who drank more coffee tended to have lower total body fat and lower visceral fat.
They also tended to have greater skeletal muscle mass. That point is especially striking because these differences appeared even when body mass index was similar across groups. In practical terms, two people can share the same BMI while having very different levels of fat and muscle.
The team also measured circulating metabolites linked to cardiometabolic risk. Higher coffee intake was associated with lower levels of branched-chain amino acids, a group of biomarkers that, when chronically elevated, have been tied to insulin resistance and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
Why body composition matters more than BMI alone

A bathroom scale cannot show where fat is stored or how much muscle a person carries. Visceral fat, which accumulates around internal organs, is considered more harmful than fat stored elsewhere because it is closely tied to inflammation, abnormal blood sugar control, and cardiovascular risk.
That is why the study's body composition findings stand out. If heavier coffee consumers truly carry less visceral fat and more muscle, that profile is generally viewed as metabolically healthier, even if overall body weight does not look dramatically different on paper.
This helps explain why BMI can miss important differences. A person with a moderate BMI may still have excess visceral fat, while another person with the same BMI may have more lean mass and better metabolic resilience. Coffee's associations in this study fit that more nuanced view of health.
The hormone differences were not the same in men and women

Some of the strongest associations appeared in men. Greater coffee intake was linked to a more favorable glucose-insulin profile, along with higher total testosterone, higher bioavailable testosterone, and higher levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, commonly called SHBG.
At the same time, free testosterone and the free androgen index were modestly lower. That may sound contradictory, but hormone systems are complex. SHBG binds to sex hormones in the bloodstream, so shifts in SHBG can change how much hormone is circulating freely versus how much is bound.
In women, the pattern was narrower but still notable. Higher coffee intake was mainly associated with increased SHBG and lower measures of free androgens. Lead author Luca Verroest said the hormonal signature remained even after accounting for BMI and lifestyle factors, suggesting the relationship deserves closer study.
How coffee might influence metabolism

Coffee is a chemically complex drink, not a single active ingredient. It contains caffeine, polyphenols, diterpenes, and other bioactive compounds that may influence insulin signaling, liver metabolism, inflammation, and energy balance in different ways.
Earlier research has already linked coffee intake with lower risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This new Finnish study does not prove why, but it offers a plausible clue: coffee may be associated with metabolic pathways that shape fat storage, muscle maintenance, and hormone regulation.
Lower branched-chain amino acid levels are particularly interesting because these markers have repeatedly appeared in diabetes research. If coffee intake is consistently associated with lower levels, that could point to one biological route through which habitual coffee drinking tracks with better metabolic outcomes.
What this study does not prove

The study was observational, which means it can identify associations but cannot establish cause and effect. In other words, the findings do not prove that coffee directly caused participants to lose fat, gain muscle, or change their hormone profiles.
There are many possible explanations. Coffee drinkers may differ in sleep habits, meal timing, physical activity, smoking history, or other behaviors that are difficult to fully control for, even in strong statistical models. Researchers did adjust for lifestyle factors, but residual confounding is always possible.
It is also important that the cohort came from Finland, one of the world's highest coffee-consuming countries at about 11.8 kilograms per person annually. That makes the setting valuable, but it also means the results should be tested in other populations before broad conclusions are drawn.
What happens next for coffee research

The findings, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, are best seen as a starting point rather than a final verdict. Scientists now want to determine whether coffee itself is producing these biological patterns and which compounds are most responsible.
Researchers are already exploring the question in animal models, with the longer-term goal of moving into human intervention studies. Those trials are important because they can test whether changing coffee intake actually leads to measurable shifts in fat distribution, muscle mass, hormones, or glucose control.
For everyday coffee drinkers, the message is encouraging but not prescriptive. This study adds to evidence that coffee may be linked with better metabolic health, yet it is still too early to turn these findings into firm dietary advice or a recommendation to drink more for hormonal benefits.
