This recipe is even easier than pan grilling. The entire thing comes together in just a handful of steps.

    Step 1: Prep

Slice your tomatoes and get out your cheese slices. Preheat the air fryer to 370 degrees.

    Step 2: Construct the Sandwiches

Butter spread on two slices of bread using a butter knife.
Two sliced of bread, one with slices of tomatoes the other with a slice of cheese.

Spread butter on one side of each piece of bread and flip them over. Then, place a piece of cheese on two of the pieces of bread. Next, place tomato slices on the cheese until it's covered. Top with another piece of cheese and the other piece of buttered bread. Butter on the outside.

    Step 3: Air Fry

    Tips

Even a recipe as simple as this one has a few little tips to know.

    • Preheat your air fryer for even cooking.
    • Use meaty, slicing tomato varieties to limit the amount of liquid that could make your sandwiches soggy.

    FAQ

Do you have questions about this air fryer grilled cheese and tomato? Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about tomato grilled cheese.

Where did the grilled cheese originate from?

Putting bread and cheese together has been a thing since ancient times. Of course, the French have been doing it since the 1900s. What we commonly think of when we think of grilled cheese was invented in the USA in the 1920s.

Is it better to use the air fryer for grilled cheese?

I prefer it. It's far less messy to simply construct the sandwiches and then let the air fryer do its thing. They also cook more evenly.

Why don't I have to grease the basket?

In this case, you don't have to grease the air fryer basket because the entire surface of the bread is covered in butter. It basically greases the basket for you.

    Instructions

    • Get out and measure your ingredients.
    • Spread butter on one side of each piece of bread.
    • Lay the pieces of bread butter side down. Place one piece of cheese on two slices of bread. Honestly, I usually use 2 pieces of cheese. One on each side or slice with tomatoes in between. Not only is it cheesier but the cheese helps hold the tomatoes in place. Place 3-4 slices of tomato on the same slice or side.
    • Place the other buttered pieces of bread on top of each sandwich.
    • Place both sandwiches in air fryer basket.
    • Air fry at 370ºF for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. They are done when the tops begin to brown.
    • Serve.
