What is a Pizookie?
Air fryer pizookie is an epic mashup between a pizza and a cookie—a deep dish pizza-shaped cookie, stuffed or not.
The idea for a pizookie originated and is trademarked by a restaurant named BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, which is a popular chain in the U.S. but it's served in other restaurants too.
Since I don't live close to any locations, I get to enjoy our copycat version of this BJ’s Pizookie recipe.
Some places will even bake and serve their pizookies in deep dish pizza pans, but for the most part are made in a cast iron skillet.
Pizookies are served warm, topped with a few scoops of cold, creamy ice cream. The most popular pizookie flavor is chocolate chip, but you can also find salted caramel, cookies and cream, triple chocolate and so much more.
Just wait until you see the list of all the possibilities! Pizookie basically means the best cookie you'll ever eat.
Homemade Pizookie Flavors
The first thing you must consider when deciding how you want to make your own personalized homemade pizookie is the kind of dough you want to use as a base.
We make chocolate chip cookie dough most frequently. However, peanut butter, oatmeal and sugar cookie dough are great options too.
My goal in mentioning these options is for you to have enough suggestions to create a ton of different homemade pizookies, if you desire!
You can also change the texture and flavor of your air fryer pizookies by adding different dry roasted and lightly salted nuts. Think sparkles and sprinkles too.
Chocolate Overload
Here are a few ideas for making your air fryer pizookie truly gourmet by adding chocolate.
- Add in equal parts of all of the chocolate chips you can find, semi-sweet, milk, white and dark, with some ice cream and chocolate sauce
- Add in chunks of chocolate
- Chop up chocolate bars to add
- Try chocolate candies like kisses
And if you're ready for a complete chocolate overload make the cookie dough chocolate too. Simply reduce flour by half a cup and add a third of a cup of cocoa powder. Add extra chocolate chips and serve with chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce.
Chocolate. Chocolate and more chocolate.
Peanut Butter
Here are a few ideas for incorporating peanut butter into your air fryer pizookie.
- Add in equal parts of peanut butter baking chips, peanut butter M&M’s and miniature Reese’s cups
- Add a layer of peanut butter to the middle of the cookie dough. Or, add ½ cup peanut butter and about ¼ cup powdered sugar together and add that to the middle so it tastes like the filling of a Reese’s peanut butter cup
- Make peanut butter s'mores with chocolate, peanut butter, marshmallow and ice cream
- Use chocolate or peanut butter chocolate ice cream
- Drizzle peanut butter, melted in 15 second bursts in your microwave, stirring in between, all over your pizookie. If you have access to chocolate peanut butter I urge you to try this too. Oh so good
- To make peanut butter flavored pizookie dough simply add half a cup of peanut butter to the recipe when adding the butter
Caramel
To make your own caramel sauce, melt two cups of caramels and a couple of tablespoons of heavy cream in your microwave. Stir at 15 second intervals.
Place half of your dough on the bottom of the pan, then place caramel filling and finish with remaining dough on top. Make sure the edges are sealed and then bake. Once baked, take the same melted caramel and drizzle all over your hot cookie as soon as your air fryer pizookie is cooked.
Here are a few other ways to add caramel flavor to your air fryer cookies.
- Salted caramel—just add a sprinkling of coarse rock or sea salt to caramel once added to cookie
- Add broken salted pretzel pieces to your caramel covered cookie and toffee bits
- Use almond toffee
- Extra caramel sauce
- Press half of the cookie dough into your pan, top with chocolate covered caramels, cover with remaining dough, seal edges, and cook until edges brown
Cookies and Cream
If you love cookie dough, simply reduce the cooking time of your pizookie masterpiece. And here are a few ideas for getting that satisfying cookies and cream flavor.
- Add white chocolate and chopped up cookies, maybe Oreos or Fudgee-O's
- Reduce flour by half a cup and add a third of a cup of cocoa powder and about a cup of chopped Oreos
Chocolate Mint
- Add some mint extract to your dough or chocolate sauce
- Add some crushed candy canes, or chopped Andes mints or After Eights

Pizookie Toppings
- Hot fudge
- Caramel topping
- Whipped cream
- Ice Cream—so many flavors to choose from
- Marshmallows

Do You Need a Pizookie Pan to Bake Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookies?
If you were making homemade pizookies in the oven you’d have more of a variety as far as pans go, but your best options are either a cast iron skillet or small round cake pan.
As for your air fryer, I prefer using mini pie dishes, but anything that will fit in your air fryer will work and work well. You can even make your own foil pan, although I don't recommend that unless you absolutely have to.
Here are a few suggestions for pizookie pans.
- springform pan—this pack of three is perfect in your air fryer or oven
- mini pie dishes with a ruffled edge or without—these are five inches in diameter and perfect for individual servings or servings for two, if desired
- cake barrel pan, which come in six, seven and eight inch diameters. Choose the biggest size that will fit in your air fryer

M&M Pizookies Ingredients
Flour—Flour is used to add chew, stability, and substance to your Fourth of July air fryer pizookies. All-purpose flour works the best for this recipe, but you could also use whole wheat or a gluten-free flour.
White & Brown Sugar—A mixture of white and brown sugar is used to sweeten this fun, summery dessert. Brown sugar adds a nice caramel flavor while the white sugar adds richness.
An Egg—A single egg is used to bind together the pizookie dough. Without the egg, your air fryer cookies would end up dry and crumbly.
Butter—Butter is used to add richness and a flakey texture to your air fryer pizookies. If you’re dairy free, try using butter flavored vegetable shortening instead.
Baking Powder and Baking Soda—A mixture of these two leavening agents will ensure that, while baking, your cookie dough spreads to fill the entirety of your baking pans.
Vanilla—A splash of vanilla helps to round out the other sweet, caramelly flavors of your pizookie dough.
Chocolate Chips—In my humble opinion, a homemade pizookie isn’t a pizookie without some kind of gooey, melty chocolate sprinkled throughout.
M&Ms—M&Ms add the perfect touch to these air fryer pizookies.

How to Make a Pizookie in an Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer on the bake/ roast setting for five minutes at 350 degrees.
In a medium bowl or stand mixer, cream together your butter and sugars for two to three minutes, or until well incorporated.
Add in the egg and vanilla and whisk together until fully incorporated.
Add your baking powder, soda, and flour and mix until completely combined and no pockets of flour remain. Once mixed together, add the chocolate chips and fold in slowly.
Spray down four personal size (four or five inch) pie dishes with cooking spray.
Fill each pie tin with cookie dough and pat down firmly.
Sprinkle the top of each pizookie with M&M’s and place in your air fryer.
Cook two pizookies at a time for nine minutes at 350 degrees.
Once golden brown and with the edges showing they're cooked, top with your favorite ice cream and enjoy!
If using a cake barrel pan in your air fryer preheat to 350 degrees and bake time is eight to 10 minutes.
I have a feeling you're going to LOVE this super easy chocolate chip cookie recipe! Topped with vanilla ice cream or another flavor, these decadent treats definitely can't be beat!
Tips
Keep an eye on your homemade pizookie at first, until you know your exact timing because all air fryers and pans are different.
To save time, grab refrigerated cookie dough from your local market—just keep an eye on them when cooking the first time.
Consider combining cookie doughs like store bought chocolate chip and peanut butter.
Instead of serving out of the pan you baked your pizookie in, you can allow it to cool and serve in slices.
Do not overbake if at all possible so the center stays nice and gooey. Remember, your homemade pizookie will continue to cook while you're eating it if you leave it in the pan it was cooked in.
Your pizookie is cooked when the center looks shiny and undercooked while edges start to brown and darken (this is normal unless you want a pizookie that is cooked more or crisp throughout).
If your air fryer cookies look raw, cook for another couple minutes at a time.
Not all dough will work being cooked inside an air fryer.
Immediately add ice cream after cooking so it starts to melt right away.
For best results, use softened, room temperature butter for this or any other baked dessert recipe.
Always heat your air fryer, without your prepared pizookies, for at least five minutes to guarantee even cooking.
Each mini pie pan uses about ¼ cup of goodies minimum, usually a little more.
Consider making dough and dividing into four equal balls and adding treats to each to suit individual tastes.
If concerned your homemade pizookie is too well done simply remove from the air fryer and carefully flip over onto a serving plate or bowl, drop the scoop of ice cream on top and serve immediately. You should be OK.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Make Air Fryer Pizookies for a Holiday?
Absolutely! Because M&Ms come in so many fun colors and flavors, you can easily swap them out for any holiday or occasion.
Use blue and red for Fourth of July Air Fryer Pizookies, green M&Ms for St. Patrick’s Day, pink and red M&Ms for Valentine’s Day, a child’s favorite color or flavor of M&Ms for their birthday, or university colored M&Ms for a graduation. The possibilities are truly endless!
Can I Bake Air Fryer Pizookies in the Oven?
Sure! If you don’t have an air fryer or need to make these pizookies for an extremely large group, feel free to bake them in the oven instead.
To do so, prepare your homemade pizookies as normal all the way up to pressing them into individual, mini pie pans or ramekins.
Instead of placing the formed pizookies in the air fryer, place them on a baking sheet in a 350°F oven for six to nine minutes.
If using a seven-inch springform pan, bake for 12-15 minutes.
If using an eight or nine inch cake pan or cast iron skillet, bake for 16-23 minutes inside your oven.
Your pizookie recipe should come out crispy on the darkened edges and deliciously gooey in the shiny center.
Can You Make Pizookies Ahead?
You can prepare the dough ahead of time and portion it inside your fridge for a couple days or freezer until needed or for up to two months.
I have dough wrapped in plastic wrap and in a resealable freezer bag inside my freezer right now, labeled because I know who likes which kind of pizookie.
Including myself.

Can Pizookies be Frozen?
You definitely can freeze air fryer cookies, but I can't recommend it. Pizookies are best eaten fresh but if you need to freeze some do it in an airtight container for no longer than two months.
How to Store a Pizookie
You can store your homemade pizookie wrapped tightly in plastic or in an airtight container on your counter for a couple days as long as it hasn't been touched by ice cream.
If your pizookie has touched ice cream, store your leftovers inside the fridge for up to two days, including the day you made it.
How do You Reheat a Pizookie?
My husband will throw it into a skillet over medium heat and stir using a spatula until warmed through.
I will preheat the oven to 300 or 325 degrees, place the pizookie in a greased pan of some kind until heated through, usually about five minutes. I also put the pan on the upper rack to avoid the chocolate burning on to the pan.
Can you Double this Pizookie Recipe?
You can, but you are still going to be making homemade pizookies in batches until done. An alternative is to use a cake barrel pan or the equivalent and make a larger pizookie. As long as the pan will fit inside your air fryer it will work.
Just adjust your cook time accordingly.
How Many People Does This Homemade Pizookie Recipe Serve?
Depending on appetites, this dessert recipe will serve up to four people.
Can I Make Air Fryer Pizookies Gluten-Free or Vegan?
Of course! For a vegan alternative, use vegetable shortening or coconut oil instead of butter and an egg substitute such as applesauce or JUST egg instead of the egg.
If you’re vegan, you’ll also want to make sure you swap the chocolate chips and M&Ms for a dairy-free chocolate alternative.
Making these air fryer pizookies gluten free is as easy as swapping out the all-purpose flour for your preferred gluten-free flour. Just be sure to measure your gluten-free flour a little scantly so that you don’t accidentally dry out your homemade pizookie.
