Frittatas are a delicious meal, whether you enjoy them for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. I've enjoyed them for all of those occasions, and they're always so good! I've been making frittatas for a long time, now, and I've never lost my love for them.
I first discovered frittatas in my 30s, believe it or not. Yes, it took me that long to ever have one or even see one. My family makes a lot of delicious, hearty dishes, but frittatas were just never one of them.
I was actually introduced to frittatas when a friend of mine made one for breakfast after I'd ended up staying the night at her house after a particularly long night. When she asked me if I liked them, I responded by asking her what they were.
She laughed and said I was about to find out. Oh wow. It was delicious. I realized that it was just a fancy sort of open-faced omelet, and I resolved to make frittatas a part of my life. I've never gone back on that. I make frittatas a few times a month.
I'm a big fan of making them to use up leftovers from previous meals. Like omelets, you can put whatever you want in them, which makes them the perfect leftover buster.
Because I love to make everything I possibly can in my air fryer, I decided to give a frittata a try, and I'm so glad I did. This air fryer frittata comes out perfectly done every time, and it's absolutely delicious. It's also ridiculously easy, which is a huge plus, too.
I can't wait for all of you to try it!
History of Frittatas
Frittatas are an interesting food historically. No one knows exactly where they came from, and although they are basically an open-faced Italian omelet, they're not actually an "official" dish in Italy.
If you love food history as much as actual food, then take a second to read a little about the history of frittatas.
Dishes like frittatas have probably been around for centuries. Food historians conjecture that after pans were invented, this type of recipe would probably have been one of the first things to be created. However, no one actually knows when or where frittatas were invented.
The history of the frittata is a hobbled-together mass of conjecture based on other food facts that food historians know. While most historians believe that the origins of the frittata are accurate, there's no way to know for sure.
Most food historians agree that the frittata's roots are probably from Peria. It's believed that what we know as frittatas started out with something called Ku Ku, a Persian dish.
From there, it made its way to Spain, where it was changed to something like the Spanish Tortilla, which is mainly sliced, fried potatoes layered over an egg base. This dish became popular in several countries, making its way to Northern Africa.
From there, it most likely made its way to Italy where the Italians did away with the potato and transformed it into what we know today as a frittata.
One interesting thing is that the frittata is not actually a staple meal in Italy the way it and omelets are in North America. Instead, frittatas are usually only made when there are leftovers in the kitchen. Frittatas are used as a way of getting rid of leftovers.
Most Italians don't actually make frittatas as a regular meal. In fact, there's no uniform recipe for frittatas anywhere in Italy. It's basically just eggs with whatever leftovers are on hand mixed in.

Variations
The great thing about frittatas is that you can do so much with them. The Italians had the right idea when they decided that frittatas were a great way to use up leftovers. You can honestly put almost anything you like in them.
I've made frittatas with so many different ingredients, I almost can't remember all of them. That's how easy it is to switch things up with this recipe.
Different Vegetables
Almost any vegetable will work well in this dish. Of course, the bell peppers and mushrooms are wonderful in this, but there are so many other things you can use. Some of my favorite veggies to put in frittatas include:
- Potatoes (cooked)
- Bell peppers
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Asparagus
- Spinach
- Hot peppers
Different Meats
Any COOKED meat you would eat for breakfast would be right at home in this delicious air fryer frittata. When you get down to it, a frittata is simply an open-faced omelet, so anything that would work in one of those will work in a frittata, as well. Some of my favorite meats include:
- Breakfast sausage
- Ground beef
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Ham
- Prosciutto
- Bacon
Different Cheese
This recipe calls for cheddar, but any cheese will work. I prefer to stick to yellow cheese, but any of your favorites will work. It all comes down to personal preference. Get creative and try out all your favorites.
Tips
This recipe is so simple, I only have two tips for you. These two tips are exceedingly simple, but they can make a huge difference in how your frittata comes out. Please don't skip these.
- Cooking times can change based on the size of your pan. If you have a deeper pan with a smaller circumference, the frittata will be thicker and take longer to cook.
- If the top of your frittata begins to get too brown before it's cooked through, cover the pan with aluminum foil.
Serving Air Fryer Frittata
To serve this delicious air fryer breakfast frittata, simply cut out a slice and top it with your favorite finisher. I love to add sriracha or Tobasco sauce along with some chives. Some people opt for a little sour cream. If you've trying to eat more healthily, substitute sour cream for Greek yogurt. That's all that this delicious recipe needs. It has everything else cooked right into it!
Frittatas are traditionally served both warm or cold, but I definitely prefer this recipe served hot. After all, everyone loves a hot breakfast!
Storing Air Fryer Frittata
This frittata will keep well in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for up to three days. For longer storage, you can freeze this frittata for a couple of months. To freeze, but the frittata into pieces and wrap each piece in cling wrap. Then, store the pieces in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag.
To defrost, simply place the frozen frittata pieces on a cookie sheet and bake a 275 for about 20 minutes. To reheat refrigerated frittata pieces, use the air fryer so they don't get soggy.
