Preheat oven to 350ºF.
In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
Add egg and vanilla. Beat again.
Add flour, baking soda, and salt. Beat again until dough is uniform.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Using a tablespoon cookie dough scoop, place balls of dough on a greased baking sheet.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges turn golden brown. After 5 minutes allow cookies to cool on wire rack.
Use a cookie scoop to ensure all your cookies are the same size and will bake evenly.
Make sure not to crowd the cookies on the pan because these cookies will spread.
Allow chocolate chip cookies to cool on the cookie sheet for at least 5 minutes. Then transfer them to cooling racks to finish cooling.
You control the texture! For chewy cookies bake your cookies for about 6 minutes in total but for crunchier edges and a softer center, bake for 8-9 minutes total.
