Grandma's Surprise Breakfast Dessert Bread

Grandma's Breakfast Dessert Bread is a quick, pull apart, sweet breakfast or dessert bread recipe with yeast, a possible surprise and the best honey butter!

Equipment

  • 13 x 9 inch cake pan

Ingredients

  • 3 cups warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 packages active-dry yeast
  • 4 tablespoons oil
  • 6 cups all purpose flour, divided plus ½ - 1 cup

TOPPINGS

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 package (3 ½ oz) vanilla instant pudding powder
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup nuts
  • ½ - 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • cooking spray

Honey Butter

  • ¼ cup salted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Whipped Honey Butter

  • ½ cup salted butter, softened or 1 stick
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, using a handheld or stand mixer, combine milk, salt, sugar, eggs, yeast and oil.

  • Add 4 cups of flour and beat hard with your mixer.
  • Add the remaining 2 cups of flour and work in by hand in the bowl.
  • If you decide to try making your bread with raisins or chocolate chips or whatever inside the dough this is the time to add it. Try your best to evenly distribute it throughout as you are kneading with your hands.
  • Let rise for 15 minutes.
  • Punch down in the center and let rise 15 minutes more.
  • Prepare a 13 x 9 inch pan with cooking spray and set aside. My grandmother also used a bundt pan to make this recipe, definitely a nice change!
  • Make rolls.

If Stuffing Your Rolls

  • Form your dough into balls,  flatten one ball at a time in the palm of your hand, pulling and stretching your dough gently with your fingers.
  • Fill with preferred filling (1 heaping tablespoon or so of Chocolate Covered Caramels, Caramels, Jam or Jelly, Nutella, Chocolate Chips or Chunks)
  • Seal edges together and gently form back into a ball, making sure your edges are totally sealed up so no leaking occurs during baking and place seam side down in your prepared pan.

If Not Stuffing

  • Place rolls in your prepared pan.
  • Sprinkle with brown sugar, instant pudding, raisins, chocolate and nuts. We always try to make sure there is a little bit of something on everything, if you know what I mean?
  • Sprinkle cinnamon on top.
  • Pour melted butter all over.
  • Cover with clean, damp cloth and let them rise until they have doubled roughly in size.
  • When you are ready to bake them preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let stand for between 5 and 10 minutes.
  • Serve directly from your baking pan. Enjoy!
  • I usually serve this breakfast pull apart bread with butter,  jam, flavored cream cheese, honey, or HONEY BUTTER!!!!

Honey Butter

  • Using a fork, blend ingredients together in a small bowl until incorporated. Serve.
  • This honey butter also tastes great on muffins, biscuits, vegetables, corn and pancakes.

Whipped Honey Butter

  • If you have ever been to a Marie Callender's restaurant, this whipped honey butter will taste familiar. This is the recipe we started with and it uses less honey.
  • Using a handheld or stand mixer, beat butter until smooth, about a minute. Add honey. Beat until blended, about 30 seconds. Turn mixer up to high and whip until fluffy, between 2 and 3 minutes, scraping down the side of the bowl as needed.
